So much racism/prejudice expressed in the Laettner documentary

A whole section about how he was hated because he was white.
Is this for real? Could you imagine if this were reversed? He'd be considered a victim.
Strange way to approach this. Did people really hate Laettner because he was a good white player who was confident?

Race definitely plays a role. Look at the most notorious college players and 95% of them are white, for whatever reason. In certain players like Laettner, they definitely did their part to earn some deserved enmity. In others, there is really little beyond a player being white to explain why they are hated. Obviously people don't hate them for being white but something about seeing good white basketball players pisses some people off. I think it's the whole attitude of 'hey that guy doesn't look athletic, how is he a successful athlete while I'm on the couch?'

Yes.
They're not kidding when they say he made the prototypical smug arse white guy playing for Duke mold. But it wasn't just about his confidence, I think most would agree he could be dirty as frick too. He was hated more for that then being white IMO, but it was all part of the package.
I thought the doc did a pretty good job of humanizing him some though. Which is hard to do because he still comes off smug as frick in interviews.
ETA: And the "prongs" representing the cogs in the wheel of the Laettner hate was pretty accurate. It was an overall package that race was just a part of when it's all said and done.

Not speaking specifically about Laettner, but I would imagine it's pretty rustling for a black player to get schooled by a white guy in basketball.

Aren't 90% plus of the fans at these colleges White? White on White racism?

No different than some of the other 30 for 30s. The U, the Fab five, and I am positive another college one I am letting slip my mind had very similar feelings to them. Are you really that surprised?

Youngstown boys in some people's opinion.

I was in high school when Laettner was in college, played ball
myself with almost all black kids, and was absolutely obsessed with watching college basketball. I was not a Duke fan, but I never hated Laettner. As an LSU fan, you could only respect him, especially with what he did to Shaq that game. He dominated.
I never got the feeling that race was a factor back then in real time in hating Laettner. I am surprised to hear it mentioned so prominently now.

I like what Belle said. It was one of several things with him and depending on who you were it could have been just that one thing or all of those reasons. Obviously looking back on it now those players who thought he was some rich entitled punk who had life easy were wrong. I see how they could think that though in their younger, more ignorant days.
For me personally, it is Duke. You win too much lol.

My dad hated Duke so I hated Duke. I was like 7 when he was playing. I still hate Duke lol. I don't even know why really

The U, the Fab five,
This. Both of those talked about how they believed race played a role. Particularly the Fab Five one. I know the whole thing was billed as "Academic Duke" vs "Blue-Collar Michigan" but Michigan fancies itself as a pretty prestigious academic university and the Fab Five documentary showed how the players were getting highly racist letters from Michigan alum who did believe they were representing the school in the way they felt it should be represented.

I can't imagine any instances of a player being hated because he was black. It's.....INCONCEIVABLE!

What about Jason "white chocolate" Williams?

they thought he was a smug white rich preppie basketball player, when he was actually more "street" than a lot of people he played against

He was a white boy from the 'burbs that clowned the shite out of the Fab 5.

I didn't hate him for being white, I just thought he was an over hyped dukie, media darling who got away with murder...

I just like the picture of Grant Hill wearing a Carlton esque sweater standing in front of a huge mansion/estate with his dad

Let the record show that I, for one, do not hate Christian Laettner in any way, shape, or form
