So many coaches screw themselves by taking the "better job"

It's such a common thing, I guess it's hard to turn down the paycheck and the publicity but these guys really screw themselves.
I'm talking guys like Rich Rod who leaves a great thing at WVU to suck arse a t Michigan. Looks like we have two this year with Charlie Strong at Texas and Sarkisian at USC.
Those guys could've stayed put and just been all time greats at the schools they were at (Wash and Louisville) with minimal pressure.
You gotta think guys like Gary Patterson, Art Briles, and Bill Snyder get a good chuckle out of it. Those guys have it made at small schools and can basically do no wrong, hell Snyder can knowingly allow a criminal to sign with his team and everyone's already forgot.
I'm not saying these guys are doing/ could have done what the greats did but look at coach K and Joe Pa (you know, before the whole child sex thing...) and how they took "lesser" schools and turned them into powerhouses. He'll look at what Chip Kelly did at Oregon, I bet part of him wishes he was still there getting overrated every year.
If I ever have the opportunity to be a major college coach I'm staying put at the school I gain success at and becoming a legend

Sarkisian was about to get fired at UW.
Haden is just an idiot.

or they could be like Hud or Greg Schiano and screw themselves by not taking it...

It's not just the money, they're competitive guys and want to win at the highest level. I really respect the guys like Snyder and Patterson though for thinking big at their current jobs and built their programs into legitimate championship contenders instead of taking a bigger job

You know what coaches enjoy? Building a program from nothing. That's what makes coaching fun.
Maintaining a successful program just isn't as fun.
So not only do coaches get a more prestigious job at the bigger school, but it is more fun to try to build a program, and they get paid more on top of that.
It makes sense for them to take the job unless they aren't looking for a challenge and don't want more money. Maybe some coaches are perfectly happy to just stay put. I mean, just like any worker in any field, not everyone has the same goals and aspirations. And that's okay.

Guys can also screw themselves by not striking when the irons hot. Bob Pruett and Steve Logan turned down the LSU job to stay at Marshall and ECU respectively. Pruett was out at Marshall in 2004, Logan in 2002. Neither has been a HC since.

You know that's a good point, I always get bored of my NCAA dynasties once I win a few nattys and get all 5 star recruits

Schiano missed his chance at Miami as well.

Sarkisian had fallen way out of favor and was rumored to be on the hot seat at Washington. Apparently his drunken antics were worse at UDub, and he has the nickname Sevin Win Steve for a reason.
I do agree with Strong, however. He should've never taken that job, especially since he was like their 5th choice and was rejected by their boosters from the outset.

Yup, look at Saban taking the Dolphins job.

I thought Petersen was going to be at Boise for life. Seems like he had plenty opportunities to bounce but stuck around. Finally took the UW job. We'll see how it works out for him.

The bothersome thing about Strong was that he had such a hard time getting a HC job and so he always spoke about how deeply grateful he was to Tom Jurich and Louisville for pretty much offering him the job before he interviewed. He rewarded their loyalty by flirting with the Tennessee job and ultimately bolting for the Texas job. Plus, Louisville was stepping up to the ACC, so it's not like he was going to be forever mired in a non-P5 conference.

This is dumb. No one started at the top. They all started somewhere and made their way up.
Good thing Harbaugh, Miles and Meyer just to name a few didn't follow that logic.

Spurrier, at least for a little while. He seems to be very happy at South Carolina though.
