I'm so glad that that devil of a drug wasn't around when in was in my younger days experimenting with drugs.
Heroin was considered beyond the pale back in the Eighties when I was in high school. When several musicians started overdosing on it in the early nineties is when it seemed to start making a comeback. I think the mid nineties is when the pain pill epidemic really got kicked into gear. I never remember people having or talking about pain pills when I was in high school and college. I'm really glad it was not that widespread back then because I very well could have fallen victim to that. It is sad to see bright, talented young people mess with this and fall victim to it. I hate to hear these stories. Such a waste and devastating for the families that have to suffer through it.

I could have easily wound up addicted to the stuff after I injured my neck a few years ago. I was in intense pain for months but I'm one of those people that opiates make sick as a dog. If I hadn't been then yeah, I'd have had a lot of trouble getting off the stuff.

Scary reading this thread about how slippery the slope is to drug addiction. I don't know anybody that struggles with drug addiction. I take that back, I know a couple of guys that smoke weed, I wouldn't call that struggling with addiction though.
When my wife gave birth last year she tore pretty good down there. She was hurting pretty bad, the next day I went to the hospital to visit her and she was high as a kite. Docs had given her a prescription of percocet. She took it a few times while in the hospital and they gave her a prescription she took home with her. She didn't follow through on taking the meds though (you know, take 2 times a day for x amount of days) because she flushed them. She told me those were some powerful arse drugs and she was scared to death she was starting to like them and would get hooked. Said she would rather be in pain than get hooked on those things. She actually had withdrawals when she quit taking them and she had only been on them a couple of days.

I'm sorry to say that's not a surprise, the really powerful stuff can be insanely addictive.

Dope is not that hard not to get strung out on unless your just an unhinged junkie or somebody who struggles with everything, booze included. To me recreational means a couple times a week. If you do anything everyday you have issues. Just have to be smart enough to know that 2 or 3 days in a row and youre going to have some ugly shite to deal with
The biggest issue imo is not knowing what you get any given time. Ive seen 15 year junkie friends blue out after doing a point because it was so stout or had fent or some shite in it

There is a decent documentary on Directv Audience Network called Locker Room Addiction. It's a show covering several high school and college athletes who became addicted to pain killers and moved on to heroin.
It's available on demand and airs 6/23 @ 3:00 CST
