Skip Bayless, other FS1 'opinionists' under pressure to debate sports that air on network

Skip Bayless, Colin Cowherd, Jason Whitlock and the rest of the "opinionists" at Fox Sports 1 should study up on baseball, NASCAR, UFC and international soccer. With the sudden firing of FS1 chief Jamie Horowitz last week, the pressure is on FS1 studio talent to talk more about sports that actually air on their network rather than debate LeBron James, Steph Curry and the Cowboys ad nauseam. That's what Sporting News is hearing from multiple sources about the future of FS1's studio shows post-Horowitz, the aggressive young exec who recruited Bayless, Cowherd, Whitlock and other talents to FS1.

quote:

How often does the "Undisputed" crew — Bayless, Shannon Sharpe and Joy Taylor — debate LeBron, Curry and the NBA, which airs on rival networks ESPN and TNT, rather than sports that air on FS1? Too often. How often do Colin Cowherd and Kristine Leahy on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," and Cowherd and Whitlock on "Speak for Yourself," debate MLB, NASCAR, UFC or international soccer? Not enough, considering these leagues are in business with their network. ESPN doesn't make the same mistake. In fact, the Worldwide Leader in Sports is notorious for virtually ignoring sports with which it doesn't have a TV deal. Just ask the long-forgotten NHL. Yes, I know FS1 has "NASCAR RaceDay" and another studio show for international soccer. Yes, I know Fox Sports also owns 20 or so regional sports networks that carry the NBA, MLB, the NHL and other sports. But the truth is you're more likely to hear a debate about Lonzo Ball's summer league game on the two biggest shows — "Undisputed" and "SFY" — than about baseball stars Mike Trout and Jose Altuve, NASCAR drivers like Kyle Busch and Danica Patrick, or UFC fighters like Daniel Cormier and Amanda Nunes.

quote:

"There's a disconnect. These debate shows are still going on and on about the NBA — which ended a month ago — and there's not enough about MLB which is in the middle of a season," one source told SN. "Jamie would protect those guys if they still wanted to talk NBA. But Jamie is gone." Another source was equally blunt: "Look, (FS1) airs MLB, UFC and soccer — and all these studio shows ever seem to talk about is the NFL and NBA. They have to reflect what’s actually on FS1 — and what drives ratings." Said a third source: "These debate shows don't make sense given what’s actually on FS1. It's like they're switching viewers in and out."

Could, it would help make a casual fan more aware of the people in these sports.

They can't discuss summer league?

That's backwards though. Sports shows don't tell the fans what to be interested in, they're supposed to react to what they want to hear.

Their executives don't have a clue if that's their plan. Let them talk about soccer and NASCAR so their ratings can plummet even further.

They do, the more they talk about the players the more you know about them. So when you see them on TV you naturally tune in to see what the fuss is about.

It's a chicken and egg argument. Does the debate show topics creates fans or do fans create the debate show topics?

I'm not saying they create fans, but they can make a casual or non-fan tune into a sporting event they may not otherwise watch. Just getting that person to tune in can make them tune in again and again... they may not become a fan but it could become something they start to follow a bit more because of all of the talk of certain players.

Terrible strategy. Most of their hosts don't know anything about these sports especially nascar and international soccer. The nfl and NBA are by far the most popular sports in America and most people would rather listen to what lebron ate today than what's happening the middle of the year in baseball.

They would be even more a joke if they tried to create baseball and NASCAR hot takes...

That's not why I watch.

I tune if I expect them to talk about a sport that I already follow. If they're talking about something I don't like I turn it off.

Baseball needs a larger than life celebrity to get more people interested. Somebody people will know even if they don't watch baseball.

Well congrats you don't make up every casual sports fan either....

other people don't, my brother for example listens to sports talk on the radio while he is driving. They talk about things he doesn't care about but he listens because he doesn't want to change the channel or he hates radio.
Same thing for people, sometimes something comes on and you just find yourself watching. Something that is said catches your attention, remote is in another area, whatever the reason.

baseball has plenty they just don't promote individual players over the game. Only those players endorement deals promote them... hence why you see more of Harper with Gatorade and Nike.
