The nature of the article is about Chip Kelly and the Eagles, but there will be spades of teams pushing the pace and running up-tempo.

The Patriots are already doing it.

The Saints are reportedly looking to do it.

The Eagles will do it.

I imagine the Bears will do it with Trestman.

The Broncos will do it.

I think refs are pushing the limit of their authority by saying, "We won't speed up well, because...."

Honestly guys that are offended by this, how often have you been angry because the ref is taking too long for a play to start?

Its rare, and usually is happening inside of 2 minutes.

This comment is less than when they moved the refs around a couple years ago and Peyton Manning was complaining. He was upset because they would set the ball, then he'd have to wait for the ref to get behind him before he could snap it. If that didn't slow down offenses(which it didn't) then this isn't a problem. This isn't even rules changing, it is referees saying they'll continue to do what they have always done.

No, it's officials saying "This is the rule and process of setting the ball for a play. Adapt to it, because we aren't changing it because you want to play faster."

Right, but refs should adapt with the game, IMO.

I don't think "Well this is the way we've always done it" is any explanation when the question is, "Why can't you go faster to accommodate a perfectly legal operation?"

If it becomes an issue they may adapt in the future. But thus far there hasn't been any problems that I'm aware of. They aren't going to change the way they referee before there's an issue.

There are things they have to do between plays. I would just prefer accurate refereeing over fast refereeing.

It sounds really weird to say refereeing out loud.

I agree.

For sure. And I understand they have different regulations regarding changing balls and all that.

I think my biggest qualm is why should they referee any differently inside of 2 minutes as opposed to the beginning of a quarter. If they can do it then, they can do it always.

Same reason other rules change inside 2 minutes.

Like challenges, like out-of-bounds, etc. I get what you're saying, but the last 2 minutes of a half are the most important 4 minutes of the game. And typically have the fastest gameplay.

It just means that the team has to wait for the refs to move the ball, start the clock, etc. I've seen several times where Brees and Peyton have sat there at the LOS waiting for the refs to signal they are ready.

This is why I don't think Chip Kelly's offense is going to be that revolutionary for the NFL like some are believing other then being up tempo with more read option looks. There are plenty of teams that run a high tempo offense already in the NFL and you can only go so fast.
