I will say this, when Shaq was in his prime, the only elite big he faced was Duncan, and there was a noticeable decline in Shaq's stats during those series. Those were the series when Kobe went off.

While Shaq was with the Lakers, he played 25 playoff games against Duncan, (between 1999 and 2004).

Here are their averages in those 25 games

................PTS.....FG%....REB...AST...BLK
Duncan.....25.8....48.2%...12.8....4.0.....2.4
Shaq.........23.8....53.8%...13.5....2.5.....2.8

Between 1999 and 2004, Shaq's regular season averages per game were:

26.9 points, (on 57% shooting)
11.8 rebounds
3.2 assists
2.4 blocks

So his scoring against Duncan fell 3 points a game, but his rebounds and blocks increased. There was really no noticeable decline in his numbers

What were his playoff averages in series not involving the Spurs?

Everybody points to his numbers against Smits, Dik and Collins, and they were sick, but it's difficult to maintain that pace when there's actually an interior offensive threat on the other end that he has to account for.

If I had to pick a center [for an all-time best team], I would take Olajuwon. That leaves out Shaq, Patrick Ewing. It leaves out Wilt Chamberlain. It leaves out a lot of people. And the reason I would take Olajuwon is very simple: he is so versatile because of what he can give you from that position....People don't realize he was in the top seven in steals. He always made great decisions on the court. For all facets of the game, I have to give it to him.

The argument for Shaq is that, despite a pretty even but ultimately losing matchup with Hakeem, he wasn't in his prime. However, that season, Shaq scored 29.1 ppg (2nd highest in his career), and had 11.4 rbg (that was pretty typical for Shaq).

Conclusion: Shaq was at his best in 94-95. I challenge anyone to find a sustained period of time when he was better. In fact, aside from 1999-00, 94-95 was maybe Shaq's best season.

Love Shaq. I'll take the Dream.

Shaq's PER that season was 28.6

He had 6 consecutive seasons, (from 97-98 to 02-03), where he had a better PER than that

Dream is my all-time favorite player. As far as I'm concerned, he's one of the first centers that had the mid-range game. He could handle the ball, or take you inside. I watching the game when he dropped the elusive "quadruple-double".

HOWEVER, Shaq is the most physically dominant player to have played since Wilt. I would take Shaq over dream all day.

No idea.

But here are his playoff averages for those same years

27.5 points, (on 55% shooting)
14.0 rebounds
2.9 assists
2.6 blocks

pretty easy to make a case for either....

but i'll go with the GOAT's comments on Hakeem.

Dream is very underrated as an all-time legend. Shaq is undoubtedly the most physically dominating center since Wilt, but the Dream was the total package.

You remove his lower numbers against Duncan and I would definitely say there was a noticeable decline. Hell, Duncan produced comparable numbers in those series as you pointed out.

Things are a little different when you're facing someone with similar ability. Hakeem had Ewing, Robinson and Shaq. Shaq only had Duncan, who did manage to beat him a couple times.

Try to imagine prime Hakeem, playing alongside another top five player under a HOF coach, in a league where there's no other truly elite center. His numbers would've been even better, and without the anemic FT shooting.

In Orlando he 29ppg and 13 boards per his 2nd season. Same centers Hakeem played against and Hakeem never matched those numbers.

I love shaq, but I would say if I was building a team it would be hakeem. Better team player, better free throw shooter, could play inside and out. Shaq was a more dominant force but didnt have the skill set Hakeem had.

If I were a coach Hakeem, if I were the owner and GM it would be Shaq, he's more marketable.

If you ask Shaq this question he will say Hakeem. So I'll go with that

Wow

this is a tough one, because both are completely different Centers.

Shaq was unstoppable down low, but man, The Dream could run the offense, pass, steal the ball, he did everything while out there. That Houston team had guys who could triple double on any night.

If Shaq could hit a free throw, he would of been an even bigger monster, but the hack a shaq worked.

Depends on your team.
