Scouts not sold on Tebow's baseball skills

shocker
quote:
The reviews from anonymous scouts are in: Former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow doesn't seem to be very good at baseball when compared to other 29-year-old pros.
As one told Katie Strang of ESPN.com: "If (his swing) was any longer, it would take out the front row."
Another offered this: "No shot."
The eye-opening part of this from a fan's perspective will be the comically long list of scouts who will be lining up to blast this baseball showcase on Aug. 30. A majority of Major League Baseball teams will be sending a representative to watch the inspirational Heisman Trophy winner, and our best guess is that a majority of them will not be happy about it. But it's important to understand that scouts in both baseball and football have inconceivably long seasons and spend endless hours toiling inside hot, dusty out-of-the-way stadiums trying to separate ability from the foundational tools that make up a professional in the sport. It is a wildly thankless job and most of them are only remembered for being wrong. A majority of teams will probably send West Coast scouts in driving distance to the showcase, but if Tebow isn't even a single-A caliber talent, all of them will have to be wondering what else they could have been doing that afternoon.
The workout will be frustrating because it's a workout -- it's designed to accentuate everything that Tebow does well and could eventually raise more questions than answers.

Its going to be funny listening to the numerous disagreements regarding his potential.. Ive gotten to know someone whos a scout.. Hes only seen the limited video out there and though his swing was a little long, thats something he thought could be tightened up with limited time.. He thought his turn and power were worth teams taking a look because hes got natural quickness. The key will be how he tracks breaking pitches.

Meh. He gave it a shot. His "backup" gig at SEC Network is pretty much better than every poster's job so kuddos to him.

Can someone with basic baseball knowledge explain the "long swing" thing to me? I want to assume it's the arc of the swing, which I want to say is solely dependent on his wingspan.....which he has no control over. Or is that a technique issue?

Probably just not as fluid as he should be.

Same thing NFL Scouts said about him in 2010.

Generally: extending your arms too soon, giving your hands a longer path to impact.

So..........everything he does wrong in football?

This smells of a hack piece with invented anonymous sources. Tebow's fans jimmies are successfully ruffled.

Basically.. Your elbow will get out in front of your hips creating a drag of the bat.. At the higher levels, everyone talks about compact swings that allow you to get to the zone quickly and stay in the zone longer.. With the elbow out front, you are forced to whip through the zone quicker but are also behind when facing serious speed. Many young hitters are like this and usually compensate resulting in pulling the ball with power. That success will go away as they face stronger pitching.
Some people also refer to getting the elbow out away from the body causing a looping long swing..

The weirdest part of this deal is that he's trying to be a position player. When I first heard Tebow was going to try baseball, I thought pitcher because he was a quarterback and a lefty. He has no shot as a hitter.

In this instance, it's technique. While the money zone for baseball player height is probably 5'11" - 6'2", there have been plenty of players at 6'3" and up.
David Oritz would be an example of a 6'3" player that does not have a long swing.

I'm shocked that big league scouts aren't crazy about a 29-year-old man who hasn't played baseball since high school.

No shite. The quoted text says the scouts will feel like they wasted their time if he's not at least A ball ready. At 29, I'd have to think they'll feel they wasted their time if he's not AA ready. Not too many 29 year olds in A ball.

29yo prospect with a 10 year layoff.
Will still receive a minor league offer.
