Damnit man ... I've got a buddy that had a hell of a year for the Royals last year and is only making 450,000

Surprised that he took that deal, I thought his agent was asking for over $40 million.

not bad. Reds saved $2 mil by not exercising Cordero's option; and Madson may just be a better closer.

Funny, Cincinnati.com and ESPN are reporting 1 year 8.5 million.

I for one, would be ecstatic not to see CoCo on the mound.

The market dried up. That contract he originally was going to re-up with was absurd as it is. If he does it two years in a row, he may get a contract in the vicinity of that other contract... though still not as much.

Here's a mind melting stat. Although Madson converted a better percentage of his saves, CoCo actually had a better WHIP last year. So as a Reds fan consistently on the edge of my seat worried about closing a game out, I'm a little worried here.

This may be the end of the transactions for the Reds. I know there's talk of signing someone to challenge Heisey in LF, but if they decide to put Frazier in that role, here's the projected Opening Day roster:

C Ryan Hanigan
1B Joey Votto
2B Brandon Phillips
3B Scott Rolen
SS Zack Cozart
LF Chris Heisey
CF Drew Stubbs
RF Jay Bruce

C Devin Mesoraco (R)
IF Miguel Cairo (R)
IF Juan Francisco (L)
IF Paul Janish (R)
OF Todd Frazier (R)

SP Mat Latos
SP Johnny Cueto
SP Bronson Arroyo
SP Homer Bailey
SP Aroldis Chapman

RP Mike Leake (R)
RP Jose Arredondo (R)
RP Logan Ondrusek (R)
RP Nick Masset (R)
RP Sean Marshall (L)
RP Bill Bray (L)
CL Ryan Madson (R)

I'd kinda like to have more than one left-handed option coming off the bench, so I could see Jocketty possibly signing an OF for cheap to fill that role and letting Frazier start out in Louisville again.

Cordero's WHIP last year was 1.02. That is absolutely fantastic, especially when you consider that the previous three years he gave them 1.44, 1.33, 1.41. Madson's 1.15 is more than respectable.

For comparison's sake, John Axford's was 1.14 and Heath Bell's was 1.15. Neftali Feliz was at 1.16.

Also throw in the fact that Cordero has been losing mph off his fastball, and this is definitely the smarter move for the Reds.

I guess that 30+M deal the Phils offered Madson, before going to Papelbon, is looking really good right about now..

Not all Boras deals are so great after all..the man alienates many franchises..Phils and he have a history of not playing ball.

Yeah, and once the market dried up, Madson's only real option was to sign a one year deal with someone in the hopes that another solid campaign would help him cash in come 2013.

As a huge Reds fan, I'm extremely pleased with this signing (for right now atleast. We will see how I feel in July and August, but it seems like a great sign). When I was up at IU, I was able to either watch or listen to just about every Reds game, and Cordero took years off my life every time he took the mound. I know the stats don't show it, but it seemed like every time he took the mound to close out a game that he would allow a hit and then a walk, or the other way around. Marty Brennaman even called him "Half-pack Cordero. Smoke 'em if you got 'em". He just never seemed to close a game easily.

I am pretty pumped about this upcoming season, especially now that we got Pujols out the division and Braun has a 50 game suspension. If Cozart comes along at SS, I feel like we definitely have the best infield in the game. Solid starting rotation, although no leftys in it unless Chapman comes around as starter. Now a much improved bullpen too.
