Seattle stand on the cusp of back-to-back Super Bowl crowns, and their success is due in no small part to rugby's tackling technique.

Widely regarded as having the best defence in the NFL, known as "The Legion of Boom", head coach Pete Carroll has turned the Seahawks into a fearsome tackling unit by adopting rugby's technique. Carroll's initial rugby investigations, however, were about safety as much as they were building a ferocious defensive unit.

"Rugby players take the head out of the game," Carroll said. "We practice this without helmets, without pads...we've been a pretty good tackling group. I don't know how you measure that, but I feel it's crucial to our style of play. This style of tackling doesn't call for the head to be involved. It's right in line with the evolution of the game. The league has recognised that, too. I thought it was worth putting out there. And the feedback we've received has been tremendous."

Carroll and the Seahawks even put out a video demonstrating their rugby tackling technique; the coach wanted to show how the game could be "played safely at a high level".

This should be the new standard for tackling in football. These tackles are safe because they remove the head from the major contact, but they're also effective because they promote sound technique instead of focusing on big hits with the helmet as a weapon. I don't like the Seahawks, but I applaud them for promoting this, bc things like this will keep the game alive and well in the future

This moved into youth football in my area years ago. Makes sense to do it this way.

This could save football's ultra long prospects. I like it.

The only thing I've seen as a negative of adopting rugby tackling is that on 3&1 you need to stop that guy dead, but in rugby a tackle that allows the person to fall forward isnt a big deal but in that situation it is.

Having said that, I think thats a crap excuse and see no reason others wouldnt, would cut down the amount of pathetic broken tackles aswell

I suspect we'll see more teams taking to rugby style tackling. Not only is it safer but also more affective as illustrated by the Seahawks.

NFL is a copycat league after all.

This type of tackling is what tackling is.

Going in constantly for big hits and not wrapping up is not tackling.

I applaud the Seahawks for making this an emphasis in their practices.

I think it's easier to "change gears" to a more violent (I guess that's the right word) nature for 4 or 5 plays per game than to try on a majority of plays to reign yourself back from a big hit mentality.
