So you're saying his stats have perished?

Neither does Kevin Garnett.

But seriously, did it say what he made on his ACT?

The NCAA dropped the hammer on Centenary to the tune of six years of probation in which the Gentlemen couldn’t appear in the postseason or have their statistics reported in NCAA publications. Even though the NCAA repealed the 1.6 Rule just four days after announcing Centenary’s sanctions, it refused to budge on Parish and his Centenary teammates.

The NCAA ladies and gentlemen. :golfclap:

That's awesome that Parish and his teammates stayed at Centenary. You rarely see loyalty like that anymore.

In Parish's playing days, there were fewer teams making the NCAA playoffs. Also, players could not turn pro as quickly as they can now.

On a side note, this is where I first heard Jim Hawthorne, doing Centennary games on the radio, before he advanced up the ladder to LSU.

I had heard that before. Maybe this situation is why he's been so angry about calling games all these years.

Nice thread. Interesting story. I remember briefly reading about that.

My grandfather was the athletic director of Centenary at the time and unfortunately, was the fall guy for Centenary being put on probation. He was instrumental in the recruitment of Parish, but didn't do anything out of the ordinary to sign him. Still, the NCAA basically ended his career. Granted, I'm an anonymous opinionated poster, but my grandfather was (is still) a man of integrity who was once the head basketball coach of Army and an assistant football coach on the same staff as Vince Lombardi. Despite him losing his job, to this day (he's 92 now) he's still very fond of Robert.

FWIW, the NCAA told Parish he was free to play at UCLA (who was recruiting him hard at the time) and their program would not be threatened to be placed on probation.

Used to go watch Centenary play in those days. They were a real powerhouse with Robert Parish, Bobby White and Barry McCloud.

I wish I could have been there, but it was before my time. My parents tell a story about how they took my older sister who was 2 weeks old at the time, to her first Gents game. Parish's stat line was ridiculous for that game- 50 points and 25 rebounds.

Definitely the golden age for Centenary basketball, even if they were put on probation.

There were other issues on why he stayed. I knew 'slim'...we didn't call him 'chief' at Centenary. Slim did not come from poverty. He had a mom and dad and a car. But he had a love child in HS and family that he wanted to stay around.

He was really hacked off that Union HS, where he played as a freshman was eliminated as a school during de-segregation and he was moved into Woodlawn HS.

He never wore a Woodlawn varsity Jersey. He kept his Blue jersey with a 'U' all through college in honor of Union High.

Centenary had a pretty good team of guards and forwards...most notably, Larry Davis. All they needed was a center. CC coaches knew that if Parish stayed home they could recruit OOS players. It happened.

Barry McCleod, a PG from Bridgeport came specifically to play with Parish. Nate Bland came from Albany, NY. The team ended up being ranked 19th in the nation at the end of the year but they were banned from post season play.

Robert was not a bright guy but he went to class. He graduated on time. He always borrowed by baseball glove for intramural tournaments.

The most ironic thing was that I saw him play Indiana State at Centenary's Gold Dome. Indiana State upset the higher ranked Centenary. They had a junior forward named Larry Bird.

Parish played his final game for Centenary in spring of 1976. Larry Bird didn't play for Indiana State until the fall of 1976.

Parrish vs Jabbar was the golden age of the NBA.
