Tim Brando of Fox Sports has reported that Notre Dame is having conversations about joining the Atlantic Coast Conference for football. Already a member in all other sports, the Fighting Irish would become the 15th full-time member if this were to happen. Should the ACC be looking for a 16th, surely the University of Connecticut would be a leading candidate. The conference has already announced plans to launch a television network in 2019, a move which seems to be a necessity to keep up with the NCAA’s other major conferences

I'm skeptical. It would take a lot to get ND to give up their independence...and I mean a lot.

Dumb move on its part unless they figure the NBC contract isn't going to be renewed. Plus who is going to care about the ACC in Northern Indiana's media markets. Yes ND is a national brand, but Chicago, Indianapolis, and Detroit are Big Ten stalwarts. Plus South Bend and Kalamazoo tv markets aren't big enough to matter.

ND is the only program that can go fully independent. 8-4 in the ACC will mean the program gets further and further buried.

They should talk to the big ten.

Too many big dicks in that room to be productive. You have Nebraska, Michigan, OSU and Penn State already who see themselves as top 10 programs. OSU specifically has apparently been a barrier to ND joining in the past. Both want to be the "big dog"

Will be interesting how this screws with what is now their OOC scheduling. I assume they will keep USC and navy but after that?

Notre Dame is locked in to the ACC if they ever join a league in football

I just don't see it happening. ND is too stubborn and wants to stay as an independent. They don't want to or have to answer to anyone right now.

I can see Purdue, MSU and even Michigan being in favor of ND joining the big ten. Rivalry games that guarantee sell-outs and TV coverage.

Plus media in Chicago and Detroit will stop covering ND. ND needs those markets and Ohio. I can tell you that outside of South Bend, no one cares about ND hoops within 200 miles of South Bend.

Of course FB is number 1 by far, but if ND stops playing Michigan, MSU, and Purdue regularly and adds Wake Forest, Duke, Syracuse, NC State, people will stop caring about ND football. They have only room for 4 non-conference games and only USC will be a challenging one. Beating up on Navy and Army gets tiring after awhile.

ND should either go independent or join the big ten.

They already stopped a good # of those games actually. ND's real "rivarly" is with the west coast schools

If they join a conference, they will play Navy, USC and Stanford annually as OOC

I assume Notre Dame will get to keep its football contract with NBC that runs through 2025, if this actually happened.

Anyone who mentions ND and Big Ten in the same sentence anymore have absolutely zero clue what they are talking about. It's ACC or independent....period.

I also don't doubt that there are "discussion" going on right now, but I'll believe that they are serious discussions when I actually see that Notre Dame has officially joined in Football.
