What does that even mean? Brian hoyer's garbage arse had them in the playoff hunt deep into the season. hoyer was so bad by the last quarter of the season they basically had to try something else by making the switch, and that's the guy who beat Johnny out as the starter.
You quoted a poster saying CLE is a black hole for QBs, then talk about how bad Hoyer was, I think you're answering your own question here.

I quoted a guy saying something to the effect of "let's not pretend he got an adequate shot"

I don't get what he means by that. He was beat out by a guy that everyone knew was a below average qb to begin with, how is that not getting a shot when they draft you in the first round and say "OK, you have to beat out BRIAN HOYER".

The point I'm further trying to make is that Brian Hoyer had the Browns in the playoff hunt, and they still benched him for being so bad... and THAT'S the guy you couldn't beat out as a starter. How many teams do you see in the wildcard hunt late in the season bench their starting qb for sucking... that says a lot. History aside (which I agree is bad for that franchise and qbs), last year's team had a solid defense and was obviously good enough to be in the playoff discussion. If they had average production from the qb it would have been interesting. But they didn't get that, including a guy they traded up for to take in the 1st round.

All this hype for beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa once. He's on a downward spiral.

Manziel had a great college career. It was hardly one game.

That being said, i never thought he would do much in the NFL. The lifestyle only makes it worse.

One of the better "what if"s in recent sports history, but I've always wondered how his career would have been perceived had Alabama ended up winning that game.

Seems stupid to take a project QB and then move on from him so quickly.

Agreed. I thought it was dumb for the Browns to trade up to burn a first rounder on him in the first place, but to move on from him after one year when they knew the risks and the fact that he wasn't ready anyway is just incomprehensibly stupid.

There's a reason this franchise has stunk for two decades.

He needs to learn from Gronkwoski.

Dude is a workaholic and gym rat when it matters and saves the partying for the off season.

Partying before games and shite is just frickin' dumb. As stupid as people think Gronk is, he busts his arse, NEVER drinks and drives and is generally an extremely respected teammate during the season.

Oh well...talent alone doesn't mean shite.

He was never that talented, at least on an NFL level. I never saw it with JFF. NFL linemen can run just as fast as him. He was never that accurate, he's small. He was just in the perfect system for him at TAMU.

I don't think moving on from a mistake is stupid. If he had the personality of Marcus Mariota then you can work with someone like that. But the warning signs were always there with him and every single concern turned into reality. Cut bait and move on. He had his shot.

Gronk cares if his team is good. Manziel doesn't

He probably won't amount to anything as a pro, but he absolutely shredded the SEC record books that year. Don't act like it was just one game. He was an excellent college QB.

Connor Shaw is a guy I really root for. So damn efficient in college and seems like a great kid and hard worker.

Yea which has been done 5000x.

You could compile a list 20 players long, yea he won the heisman but at this point, he's just another NFL bust with a shitty attitude and no respect for the league/his team.

I think you missed the part where I said he likely won't amount to shite as a pro. Thanks for agreeing with me that he was a great college player though

Well major league sports contracts are usually insured to some extent. Wonder if a player in rehab qualifies the team to cash in on it.
