What stops a collegiate football player who has completed his time at a university and has a college degree from signing a free agency agreement with any NFL team before the draft? I am sure there are some rules governing this.

I'm guessing the collective bargaining agreement prevents this from happening.

An agreement that they didn't negotiate. Prospects are royally screwed in the deal, but it makes sense when you consider current players are only worried about themselves.

Don't you think in a free market society that someone could challenge this? I am sure both the teams and the NFLPA would be against the move. The NFLPA because it is like a union and if you have yet to pay union dues, they will fight you. The teams would fight it as it threathens their control of the slaves.

Wonder if Al Davis (while he was alive) ever thought of taking a shot and stealing some top flight players before the draft?

Along these lines, if say Lebron james was to declare himself now a football player, would he have to go through the draft? The Falcons just signed some track star as a WR and obviously he didn't go through the draft.

They were already both draft eligible previously.

Good point, really what would happen in the case of Lebron James?

What happens if a Myles Garrett notifies the NFL before the draft he has no intention of playing in the NFL and then after the draft signs a FA contract with whoever he wants for the amount he wants?

He can opt out of the draft but teams could still select him.

If undrafted, there's a wage scale he would still have to follow and would lose a lot money

Sure you could. But you would ruin your career because the NFL would colude against you in order to protect their cheap labor system.

Not to mention it would take half a decade to get a decision in a case like that and a ton of years of appeal

I believe the rule is once you are draft eligible once, the next year you are a free agent. So if you are drafted and you sit out until the next year you become a free agent. With the guys like the LSU track guy (name is slipping me right now) he was a free agent because he was already draft eligible in previous years.

I'm not 100% on this, but I am pretty sure that's how it works.

You have to re enter the draft if you're drafted by someone and sit out the entire year.

I know you're joking, but how is the NFL any different than a company that puts a want-ad in the paper saying "some college required"?

Employers have a right to have basic stipulations applicants have to meet before being considered
