Question about CFB Spring Football

Ohio State had 2 days of practice then broke until 3-19. I've read this is a common thing this year. Why? Does it allow the coaches the chance to "tune them up" then let them go off and practice on their own (with upperclassmen leading)? These guys practice year around and it seems this would be a good way to make it better.
