Golfers,

Looking for some golf lessons and trying to get an idea of who to look at to get them. Anyone have any suggestions on some reasonable deals/good lessons in the New Orleans area?

I am a decent golfer with a 12-14 handicap and am trying to make the leap to get under 10.

Thanks ahead of time.

The jump from 14 to single digits is short game. You need to focus on 100 yards and in and spend as much time on the putting green as on the practice tee. There are some great YouTube videos of practice drills.

If you want lessons, just use google and find some well recommended teachers. If you want a deal, do your own practice. If you want good lessons with solid direction and instruction expect to spend $75-100 an hour. Lesson packages are cheaper than single sessions.

I don't have any NO info, but that's my two cents. Good luck!

Go to the driving range in City Park and take lessons there.

Brian Manzella is in NO and ranked very highly on Golf Digest. That's a starting point.

ETA: he's proud of his lessons though.

This, at least in my case, can't be more accurate. When I play well, I shoot 72-75. When I have a bad day, I can get into the low 90's. It all depends on how I am from 150 in the particular day.

I do have to add that I believe I've figured out my swing, and around 6 over is the worst I've shot in a couple months. This has come from realizing I need to improve from 150 in and putting in a lot of work to do it.

My parents got me lessons for Christmas. Does anybody have any suggestions on what I need to focus on? Or do you just ask for help in your worst area? I don't think I want some broad overview of the golf swing.

Over half of your shots are from 100 in yet people practice it the least. It's a funny thing.

As far as lessons, yes just tell your teacher what you want to focus on. You're paying for a service and its your right to get what you want.

It would be safe to suggest that your chipping game is your weak point.

If you keep the ball in play but your greens in regulation are way off, your chipping game can be a killer or can mean low scores.

Focus on chipping.

Stay away from Golftec. I know a person that went there and it sounded like a chiropractor's scam. They just wanted to sell a whole series of lessons, wanted to construct a whole new swing, and said it would take two yrs...

My game from 150 in is actually the strong part of my game. One of the main things I found that helped my short game was proper ball and club.

The reason I'm looking at lessons is bc of the longer distances.

Getting up and down is the difference. Find something you can put in play, no penalty strokes. Play to the 150 marker, even if that means 5 iron off the tee. Get on or by the green/2 putt or get up and down.

Two most fundamental aspects of scoring in golf. Safe off the tee with a reasonable second shot and the second shot. These two things shave the majority of strokes off a person's handicap. Getting in to single digit HC will add the skills of recovery (mostly around the green/sand) and putting.

Scratch golfers that I have played with were rarely in any trouble and when they did hit a bad shot they minimized the damage or made a great save.

Find a 3 wood or hybrid for you. Play to the 150 marker.
