The way I see it if schools of the BCS (using this term for reference only) conferences can't afford to pay the players they can move down to FCS or drop football. Drop football and see what happens to your school. Especially shittey academic schools that can't attract talented students on academics alone.

In fairness, I think he's just advocating for them to get an increased stipend and not saying that they should be allowed to just send their bills to the AD.

Here's a LINKto the article about it.

I'm almost more interested in the other item about scholarships being 4 years. Does that mean that in order to "process" someone schools will have to dig up some violation of team or school rules?

The only problem I see is that cost of living is diff everywhere. For example, are schools in Cali going to be able to give more than southern schools?

Also I like the 4 year scholly. But hopefully if a kid doesn't live up to his end of the deal it can be revoked. Not just breaking the law, but if he just misses practice and meetings, stuff like that.

Seems to be the case. That's how it used to be (way) back in the day.

Of course, the medical processing is still on the table so Saban and friends will still have that tool but at least in that event, the student still gets a free ride for his four or five years.

These kids alredy get stipends,Pell Grants, clothing allowence etc...all worth about 18K (thats cash in their pockets)

This doesn't even include tuition and books.

Why do you think most all CFB players go to school year round?

Good. They should all go away so that football players can get paid their share. If they want a scholarship then they should generate revenue.

Funny, I don't recall getting a lot of the privileges they enjoy either.

Funny, I don't recall anybody giving a shite or giving money to the school to watch your intramural team go 4-5 in the B league.

In fairness, the golf and polo squads probably will be writing checks to the alma mater in the future.

Ok. Well then shut up. Nobody is advocating they get paid for the off-season. They should be paid for the hours they are making a commitment to the school. I got paid by the university to work a certain amount of hours as part of my academic scholarship. That was in addition to my scholarship money. My job was far less important, time consuming, and revenue producing as theirs.

True. But not as much as the football and basketball squads. I wouldn't be surprised if Shaq alone gives more than the entire Swim Team combined. Not gonna use golf because they have some PGA alumni.

I still wonder where the money will come from.

Also, we always say that they bring in a lot for the University. Not all of them they though. Some kids never play. In the NFL those guys are cut. If they want to be treated fairly then many of them would just be cut.

The University/AD. Or maybe the conferences themselves will set aside money for it.

In all likelihood, we're probably just talking in the range of 5K per athlete so, since this is just involving the P5 and not the Big Sky Conferences of the world, it's probably pretty doable.

There are arguments to be made against it but "there's no way to afford this!" is not among them.

I know they have the money but I'm curious. You know the coaches won't be taking pay cuts

All the talk I've heard is that the current monthly stipend will be doubled.(It's currently around $900 to $1,400 depending on the school)

So your looking at $10 to $15k per year per student.

If that's the case, that's a lot pricier than I figured but still doable.

In fact, I wouldn't be altogether shocked if the P5 has already either been setting money aside for this or has a provision in their TV contracts that allow them to increase the payout to themselves so that the networks (at least partially) offset the new costs.

Yea, exactly.

I'm more in favor of allowing players to get their own endorsements, but let's be honest, it's still pretty funny for, say, Saban to get $8mil/year or whatever AND the school randomly decides to pay off his multi-million dollar house...but the idea of giving the players a few bucks more is just crazy!!!

Cut down on the amount of salary each coaching staff gets and that could go a ways.
