Weird trade for the Dodgers IMO. Ellis was a great clubhouse presence.

Carlos Ruiz will have another shot at a World Series ring.

The Phillies have traded their long-time catcher to the Los Angeles Dodgers for veteran catcher A.J. Ellis and a minor-league pitcher named Tommy Bergjans.

Ruiz, 37, had expressed a desire to play for a contender. To do that, he waived his full no-trade rights to join the first-place Dodgers and reunite with Chase Utley. Ruiz cleared revocable waivers, allowing the Phillies to trade him this month. He will become Los Angeles' backup catcher.

Ruiz is much better with the bat. Sucks but they're trying to win a World Series

Phillies have now dumped utley, rollins, and ruiz on the Dodgers. Surprised LA even wanted the latter two

Maybe they'll take Howard off our hands also

Ruiz is a free agent after the year and is definitely an upgrade over Ellis. Not hard to see why they would want him

Utley has been good this year. But I don't see why the Dodgers dealt Ellis for Ruiz. Neither is/was going to play much behind Grandal now that he has found his bat. I guess Ruiz is a better option as a pinch hitter. But Ellis is well respected by the other players and so I think its a Dodger's loss on this deal.

Maybe, but Ruiz is coming to the Dodgers to be the backup catcher. Grandal is the starter. The minor league pitcher is a throwaway. he'll never sniff the big leagues. And I get that Ruiz is better than Ellis, but again we're talking about backup catchers. Clubhouse harmony is important. It will be interesting to see if this backfires.

If Grandal gets hurt the backup catcher becomes the everyday catcher. You have to take every roster spot seriously. Ruiz is a vet as well with a ring, I doubt he will be bad for their clubhouse. The net impact this will have either way on the Dodgers is minimal if Grandal stays healthy

it's been covered that we were looking for someone who hit lefites. We got one and got cash back to give up one of the worst players in all of baseball

obviously not enough

Not to mention he is the catcher if grandal goes down

and the FO has so much more info than we do. Outside of the Shelby miller trade this winter which was bananas from the get go, front offices generally have an idea on what they're doing. If trading Ellis was gonna be such a huge issue that it was going to detail the team, it wouldn't have happened
