norman turned pro well after jack's prime ... norman didn't become "norman" till the mid 80s ...

ernie els was unluckier than all of them, per the op's context ... norman just choked away a lot of tournaments ... sergio doesn't have as many misses against tige as ernie ... ernie finished 2nd in 3 majors to tiger in 1 year ... sergio's close, tho ... phil just never contended early on when tiger was winning, iirc ...

That's a good call. Ernie won his 2nd US Open a few months after Tiger obliterated Augusta for his first major. And, as you said, he finished 2nd to Tiger 3 majors in a row.

Ernie has 34 top 10's in 87 majors. Pretty damn impessive considering the competition he was going up against.

I saw him play at The International early in his career and it was apparent he had a hell of a future ahead of him. A great guy to boot.

Phil would have about 10 majors. But Sergio would have a bunch too IMO.

no way to really judge this, both have plenty of misses when Tiger wasn't a factor.

Who was more unlucky for when they turned pro as well as play during their careers? Phil had 4 years before Tiger. Sergio came out at the same time as Tiger. Greg got screwed in a bunch of majors by record back 9's also came out during Jacks prime. If any of these turn pro in early mid 80's, how many majors would each have? Have to say Sergio. He shoots the forth lowest Open score ever and still loses. Having to play in Tigers shadow his entire career. At least Phil had 4 years before Tiger.

You left out Tom Watson, hell of a career but dude shoulda won 3-4 more majors, shoulda won the Open 5 yrs ago at age 59. Oh and shot a hell of a round today at age 64.

I'm a big Sergio fan, but he doesn't have the resume to suggest that not winning majors is simply a "Tiger" issue.

I think Norman only had one runner up when Jack finished 1st, and that would have gone to a playoff if Jack wasn't around. That was at Augusta though and if he could have won there once, maybe the demons would have been out of his head.

Sergio only had one runner up to Tiger, but that was incredibly early in his career. If he could have gotten one who knows how great his career would have turned out. That being said, playing with the lead in a major at 19 years old would have been tough so he may still have zero.

Phil only had one runner up finish to Tiger as well and that was in the 02 US Open. If he would have won that, just like Sergio his career could have gone incredibly different. He would have gotten the monkey off his back two years earlier, and never even struggled through not winning a US Open.

Overall, I'd have to go with Sergio, because Phil still at least has 5 majors. The difference between 5 and 6 majors really isn't that different. Sergio would never be looked at as the best player without a major, and one major really can change the way people look at your career. Norman wasn't really in Jack's prime and is still viewed as a very solid golfer. I don't think his chokes were due to bad luck, but more so bad preparation and nerves.
