Phil Mickelson king of all golf underacheivers

Phil has had a great career, and if he never wins another major 5 with 3 of the 4 is nothing to scoff at, but what he could of done is astonishing to think about.
While his number of 54 hole leads in majors is relatively short the number of times he has had at least a piece of the lead midst final round is incredible, something around close to Tiger Woods total of 19 (15 54 hole plus leads, 2007 Masters and US Open and 2011 Masters). Tiger has 14 wins. Phil's leads 54 plus are as follows.
2001 2004 2006 2010 Masters
1999 2004 2006 2009 2013 US Open
2004 2011 2013 Open Championship
2001 2005 2014 PGA Championships
Thats 14 for sure and there are a few more years at the masters I believe he may have held a piece during the final round.
Some of his losses are stupid mistakes by him. Winged Foot and the 2004 3 putt from 5 feet on 17 Sunday at the US Open especially. Others are terrible luck.
2001 PGA - Phil shoots 266 a score that would win every other major than this one. Loses by 1 to David Toms who basically does the same thing Payne Stewart did to Phil on the 72nd hole in the 1999 US Open.
2002 US Open - Plays insanely good on the weekend but falls 3 short of Tiger playing at his peak.
2014 PGA - 269 Total and loses. Only player to ever lose 2 majors shooting sub 270. (The list of guys who have done that once is short). Loses to Rory at his best by a shot.
2015 Masters - 274 is the lowest score ever shot by a Runner-up in Masters history. Ran into Jordan Spieth's coronation as the next American hero.
Phil's talent and incredibly consistent and spectacular play in majors amount to someone who should be more than a 5 time major champion. It wouldn't seem right if he ends his career still on 5.

I think he's had a great career.
If you wanna talk about underachievers, let's discuss Johnny Miller.

Unlucky, yes. Not really an underachiever though.

And can still bomb drives 350+

Do you know what underachieving is?
How does this tournament support an underachieving story line?

It is a great career, but experts talk about Phil as one of the 15 greatest golfers plus of all time. He has had the talent and the opportunity to cement himself as a top 10 to 5 all time great and hasn't done it somewhat via misfortune and mistimed mistakes.

I forget the year, but his final hole epic implosion in what '07? or something like that was pitiful.
Oh, not underachieved, he just gambled way too much early. The older he gets the smarter he plays and it's paying off.

He doesn't wear socks when he plays.
Gotta respect that.

Yeah .. but nobody could choke quite like Greg Norman ..

Norman was not a choker. He was an asset hat.

I thought that British Open really kind of cemented Phil's legacy as a really great all-time golfer. He's not Tiger or Jack but he's worked his way into the next group. BTW I'm referring to golf since Jack's era. I'm not gonna try to compare the old legends.

I remember the 1996 Masters where he was at -13 going into the final round with a 6 stroke lead and blew it .. He blew it four other times too ..

the US Open in like 05 where he melted down was epic. His interview afterward was classic. Something like "I can't believe I just did that....I'm such an idiot".

I agree, Greg Norman was a great choke artist and the OP ought to be referring to him as an underachiever before Phil.

I always liked the Shark, but he was a massive waste of talent ..

I think that was 06, and he wasn't the only one, a couple of other people had a meltdown that day including Furyk

I said Greg Norman. What are you saying.
