Some pretty interesting stuff in here about the craziness that was conference realignment back then

The conference realignment board was legit

I'm still disappointed we took them. They don't belong in this conference, they belong with their traditional rivals Nebraska and Kansas.

Kind of gives you an idea going forward
quote:
A lot of people were talking about Clemson, Florida State, Louisville and what I knew based on conversations I had had with people in high positions in the SEC was that there was no way they were going to expand and add another team in a state where they already had a team. That, again, went to the SEC Network kind of blueprint. It made sense to go and add new markets in terms of the network. It made zero sense to add teams in the same state. You heard a lot about Clemson, you heard a lot about Florida State, you even heard some Georgia Tech, some Louisville. All of those things were dead on arrival.

I know that, but as a casual fan, I don't care about media markets, I care about rivalries. I care about geography. I care about culture and tradition. Heck, I don't like Arkansas being in this conference, and I think South Carolina fits in more with the ACC.
A&M is weird, but they almost sorta work since they already had a longstanding rivalry with LSU. I just hate that we're playing them on Thanksgiving. We're not Texas, and we don't want to be Texas. If they want to play on Thanksgiving, they need to kiss and make up with that school down in Austin.
Mizzou does not work at all. Despite their location, they have no rivalry with Arkansas. They should never have been put in the East side of the conference.
I would have preferred Florida State, Georgia Tech, West Virginia (if we had to expand the footprint), Miami, Clemson, or Louisville.
Hell, I would have preferred Tulane due to their history as a former SEC school, and I hate that our rivalry with them has essentially died. I would like them to be good-ish again so we can be rivals and play for the Tiger Rag.
Mizzou, to me, seemed like a backup plan that had to be used since someone else backed out at the last minute. The Yankee Tigers were the last best option available, so we took them, just like we took South Carolina back in the early 90s when Florida State said "no".

This "article" very clearly shows that Missouri tried to blow up the Big 12 because they thought Nebraska was going to do it first.
Nebraska was pissed about partial qualifiers and playing some of the football conference championship games in the state of Texas (oh, the horror). They blamed Texas for everything (I think they lost nine of 10 games played against Texas).
All of this was decided democratically under league bylaws by more than just one vote from the University of Texas.
Nebraska and Missouri (not Texas) were the ones who created the instability.
They all misplayed their hand and then blamed Texas.
frick Missouri, frick Nebraska and frick aggy while we're at it.

Yeah they brought up this article too. It is good stuff

So to answer the other thread about "what would Texas do if they weren't the conference alpha"...
We know for sure what Nebraska would do (and did), they ran away like little bitches with their hair on fire.

Do you not feel it is a fair question? Texas in the Big 10 or SEC would be a completely different dynamic then they would be used too.
While conferences would love to have Texas, I don't think they will be coming hat in hand sans maybe the ACC.

I see it more as Nebraska had a really hot girl in college (Big XII) and married her. The girl ended up not achieving anything, gained a lot of weight and just sits on her arse doing nothing all day. Nebraska got tired of that life, moved out of town, left that girl for a successful very attractive woman who has a solid career and makes a ton of money.
Texas stayed in that same town and is basically Uncle Rico at this point.
Nebraska simply chose the better option. No reason for Nebraska to stay with a crap conference when they can join a very stable conference with tons of tradition and stability.

Yeah but Nebraska also gained a few Lbs and stop giving blowjobs after a night with Miami. So she isn't what she use to be

Missouri couldn't have destabilized the conference. Nebraska left first and didn't make much of a wave on their way out.
Texas flirting with the Pac-10 and then creating their own network in exchange for staying is ultimately what broke an already dysfunctional conference. A dysfunctional conference in large part because of Texas.

Mike Slive was a terrible commissioner. He locked the SEC into a bad long term contract with ESPN while the BIG10 did something innovative with starting its own network. So Slive had to add trans to break the contract he signed. Added Missouri and Aggots for TV numbers. Slive is an awful commissioner, end of history.

Que? Did you read the "article"? The Big 10 announced it was looking. Missouri expressed interest, the Governor publicly lobbied for a Big 10 invite and then Nebraska swooped in, stole their spot and blamed it all on Texas being at fault for the contracts creating unequal television revenue sharing... the same contracts blessed by a vote by the Nebraska school president.
"Dr. Tom." LOL. What a freaking creep, like Joe Paterno.

You seriously don't know what you're talking about. Flirting with the Pac-10? What the frick about Nebraska and Missouri flirting with the Big 10, and Nebraska leaving everyone in the lurch? Such pussies!
The Longhorn Network was blessed to be created by a vote of conference presidents. What's the big deal? Nebraska and Texas A&M each explored creating their own third-tier network.
That other poster's screed (can't remember the user name) was a bunch of bullshite, too.
