Yeah, I have always assumed that was to make sure there were enough players on the LOS vs. too many men in the backfield. Never thought about it being part of the "covered up" penalty.

You'd be surprised. I've had to tell coaches that the formation is illegal many times. They're thinking, "They're receivers and a tight end, of course they're eligible receivers". I've heard that WAAAAYYYY too many times from professional coaches that should know better.

I thought that comment might be stupid, me assuming a coach would never create a play with and illegal formation, or at least sending an illegal player downfield. Thought that penalty would solely be on the player forgetting to make himself eligible.
