If you go back and look at past championship match ups, it's a pretty obvious trend of a small group of teams making the finals

And that's fine... But the quality of play is HORRIBLE compared to 25-30 years ago...........

Well at least a Seattle team or a Portland team or a Suns team would make the Finals... Plus the game was WAY better back then... 1985-1996 NBA>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Todays NBA......
Wait... are you complaining that not enough different teams make the finals now?

From 1980-1991, the Lakers were in the Finals 9 times. And the Rockets were there 2 times when the Lakers weren't. And in the East, the Celtics were there 5 times, 76ers 3 times , and Pistons 3 times.

So of the possible 24 spots in the NBA Finals those years, only 5 teams made up 22 of those spots.

Portland and Chicago made up the other 2.

And that was the first year of the Bulls' 3-peat.

Guys, it's just the usual generation thing. The younger generation will always be below theirs. I'm sure we will all say the same in 30 years

You might think that if you don't understand basketball...

That's just untrue. Although the league was fantastic 25-30 years ago, today's game is just as good just different. 25 years ago they're weren't 7 footers like Dirk and Durant that could shoot it from anywhere on the floor. Todays rules make it harder the play on ball defense but great NBA teams play great team defense.

Nope.. I am saying the quality of the game is not even close to the play years ago... BUT its seems like a generation thing... So all that think its great now did not watch back in the Day... Its all good.... Some are just not as informed as others............

Again untrue. I'm a HUGE basketball and most basketball fans love basketball history. I've watched so many games from late 80s early 90s because I wanted to see how those games were played. I also coach and take any opportunity I can to watch the great teams and players including Magic, Byrd, Drexler, Malone , Jordan and the other greats of that era. Get off of your "you didn't watch back then" horse and realize bigtime basketball fans have seen those games.

Please tell me how a guy like Anthony Davis would have been better off staying in college for 3 more years.

He wouldn't. That completely misinterprets my argument, as I said there will always be stars. LeBron didn't need college, neither did Jordan. Neither did Moses Malone way back when. Truly great players don't need college (though the NBA could use the NCAA to raise the players' profiles). I'm not talking about stars, I said the middle class.

The Miami Heat last year only had six players who had a PER of 10.0 or above and played over 1000 minutes. Six. That's ridiculously thin (and they did the same the year before, though Battier was at 9.7, feel free to call that seven).

20 years ago, the runner-up Suns had TEN players with a PER over 10 and 1000 minutes played. That kind of depth is unimaginable now. The 1992 Blazers only had 7, mainly because three guys fell just short of the minutes requirement. Lower in to 800, and they are at the 10 of the Suns. The 1996 runner-up Blazers had eight as well. The team that beat all of them, the Bulls, fluctuated between 7 and 8.

But those teams usually fell short of the 10/1000 because of minutes, not because of their PER. That tends to be the opposite today, excluding guys with minutes below 200.

Teams were deeper back in the day and used a deeper rotation. The problem is not that there isn't a next Michael Jordan, there always will be, it's that there isn't a new Hersey Hawkins or Terry Porter. It's the role guys who are markedly worse today, not the stars. The top tier players are just as good as they ever were. No argument.

Is that why they couldn't play zone D?

the rotations of today's NBA are the new rotations. that's why the heat have so few 10+ PER guys

they have 3 salaries that basically eat up their cap, and they only have a 8-9 man rotation. there is no NEED to have much depth beyond that

have you looked at anybody other than the Heat?

The pacers have 11 this year and had 10 last year

The heat have 11 this year and had 11 last year...i'm assuming there is a minute cut off? what is the minute cut off?

I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with the OP here. The NBA has been awesome for the past few years, and the playoffs last season were a blast to watch.

Considering the OP's history disagreeing with him would be wise
