University of Notre Dame's 2016 season-opening football game against Texas at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas, has been moved to an exclusive, primetime window on Sunday, Sept. 4.
Originally slated for Saturday, Sept. 3, the game now will be played at night. The exact kickoff time and television details will be announced in weeks to come. "A game of the magnitude of Notre Dame-Texas, played on the opening weekend of the college football season, deserves a special place on the Labor Day sports calendar. With this move we have secured that place and by doing so are providing a greater opportunity for fans of college football to enjoy what is sure to be another great game in a classic rivalry that dates back to 1913," said Notre Dame vice president and James E. Rohr director of athletics Jack Swarbrick.
This will mark the 12th all-time meeting between the Irish and Longhorns (Notre Dame leads the series 9-2), including the 2015 season opener for both teams in Notre Dame Stadium--won 38-3 by Notre Dame. In the last meeting in Austin in 1996 the ninth-ranked Fighting Irish kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired in a 27-24 victory over the sixth-rated Longhorns. Current Texas head coach Charlie Strong served as a Notre Dame assistant coach at that time. The Irish boast two victories over top-rated Texas teams in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas following the 1970 and 1977 regular seasons. The 1970 Notre Dame triumph ended a 30-game win streak for the Longhorns, while the Irish win at the end of the 1977 campaign boosted Notre Dame to the top spot in the final polls and cemented a 10th consensus national title.

Of all the major football programs that may play on a Sunday, I would have never included a Catholic school like Notre Dame.

What level of magnitude can a game really be when one team beat the other 38-3 the previous year? Never mind that Texas won't be ranked and is coming of 6-7 and 5-7 back to back years.

Also at calling a "series" a classic rivalry when this will only be the 12th time they played.

I'm pretty sure it was.
I thought they normally had a high profile Sunday game during Labor Day weekend. I know they usually have a big game that Monday night.

Catholic Grade Schools and High Schools play on Sundays every weekend, all the time.

I'd be laughing at the statement no matter what the opponent's jersey said if ND was playing a team they crushed the year before, has gone 11-14 the previous 2 years, and have only played 11 times previously.

I know he's just hyping it b/c it's his job but that release is little more than ridiculously out of touch corporate blow job speak.

I understand that, but it still seems a bit unlikely if there are other options.

It should be a great game. I'm expecting a better performance than last year's game. Thankfully Notre Dame won't have Will Fuller out there torching the Horn's secondary again.

That's great news, that saturday is already full of big games. This will get monster ratings in that time slot.

Frick.

We had a boat scheduled on one of the lakes for that Sunday. Gonna have to move it to Saturday now.

Luckily, I haven't bought my plane tickets yet.

I hope that this game is ONLY shown on the Longhorn Network.

Piss off ND fans: check
Further distance Big XII from TU & hopefully kick them out all together: check
Minimize recruiting exposure to both teams: check
