The streak, which dates back to the final game of the 1973 season, is the second-longest in NCAA football history. The Fighting Irish's last non-sellout game came against Air Force on Thanksgiving Day in 1973. At the time, Notre Dame Stadium had a seating capacity of 59,075. It was increased to 77,622 in 1997.

"Based on ticket sales through Wednesday, we do not anticipate sellouts for our games against Navy and Boston College," Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement, per the Indianapolis Star. "That this comes during a time of sustained success for our football program reflects both challenges impacting the ticket market nationwide and the unique dynamics of this year’s schedule."

Seems weird that game wasn't sold out before the season ever even began.

These continuous sellout streaks are often time smoke and mirrors though, there have been times where groups will just buy up a few thousand tickets right before the game solely for the purpose of keeping them alive.

Notre Dame usually sold out because they had an eclectic schedule and fans from around the country would go there to experience the proclaimed Mecca of CFB once...if they were so scheduled.

It was a place to see. Navy and Boston College is as close to a boring Conference game as you can get for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame had some WTF? schedules, which made them unique.

1981:

LSU
Michigan
Purdue
Michigan State
Florida State
USC
Navy
Georgia Tech
Air Force
Penn State
Miami

I mean, you're gonna sell that out.

I mean their schedule still includes some traditionally great team. Those teams are just not great right now

Georgia
Michigan
Stanford

Are away games...

Only USC was a home game.

The home games were:

New Mexico
Virginia
Bowling Green
Virginia Tech
Navy
Boston Colege

That's a pathetic home schedule. Not much to be excited about there except the USC game.

I don't know if the big name boys decided they weren't going to go to Notre Dame anymore (I think that's the case with the exception of USC which has to go) but I think SEC teams always refused to play at ND because they made more money at home and don't like to travel frankly. Especially Georgia. It took them 35 years from their first time out west to come out again. Most insular SEC team ever.)

Also why buy tix from the school when you could also get them off StubHub potentially cheaper?

FSU / Miami weren't " big boys in the late 70's & early 80's. Both up & coming programs ,but relatively little succesful history .

Like ND , PSU , FSU & Miami were all Independents in '81 which probably made scheduling easier. Hell I even remember FSU being called "Road Warriors" because they had to take these tough road games for recognition.

Miami certainly wasn't considered successful.

Bowden at FSU was still early, but had some top 10 teams before then.

The Nebraska streak will never be broken. They’ve sucked for years now and their games still sell out.

What’s crazy is that Navy is probably the best team out of all of them

Ahem, Nebraska. That Cornhusker sellout streak was dead years and years ago, probably over a decade ago during the Callahan years. Local businesses step in and buy the remaining tickets for pennies each. Just let it die already.
