Why is it ridiculous that NCAA athletes have a voice in the decision making process that determines the rules of their careers?

Putting aside any pro/anti union arguments in general, of course a union is a great thing for the players themselves. You think the ADs and NCAA would be more concerned with the welfare of student athletes than the student athletes themselves?

theoretically possible, but only if they use government to achieve unfair dealing

i don't care if member institutions decide to collectively bargain FREELY with their athletes

northwestern and every other member institution should have the right to revoke any scholarship of any player who joins a union

The union doesn't have to just be concerned with paying athletes.

It can be a safeguard to make sure coaching staffs don't violate practice time rules, make the NCAA isn't suspending athletes bc they used an on campus hose to wash their car and that constituted a free benefit, making transfer rules less punitive on athletes.

Capitalism. Plain and simple.

Coaches are making upwards of 5-7 million a year. AD's are making 100's of thousands of dollars. Assistant coaches are making 100's of thousands.

Athletes-free education and food.

It ain't 1935 anymore.

You do realize the end game is for player compensation and the union to take a cut out of that compensation under "dues", right?

Besides, what things do they need a voice over? They get free healthcare, they know the long term effects/risks, nobody is forcing them to play.

That's your general feeling towards unions in general coming out.

Besides they are all on year deals and most teams can process out any player they want so I'm sure that threat will be leveled at these athletes.

Why? Transfer rules should be punitive. The university is investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in each athlete.
