Football participation has dropped precipitously for some time. High school football enrollment is down 4.5 percent over the past decade...
Someone at the Washington Post apparently doesn't know what "precipitously" means. In fact, to say that something has dropped "precipitously for some time" is an oxymoron. A 4.5% drop in participation levels, even if replicated over the next decade, will hardly kill off football. It may, though, have a more dramatic impact in areas where football was already relatively weak and underdeveloped, like the Northeast.
