NFL didn’t realize Week 14 byes would impact fantasy football playoffs

For millions of fantasy football players, there was one thing about it that wasn’t charming.

Peter King points out in his Football Morning in America column that the league opted to park a quartet of byes in Week 14 without realizing that it would land on the first week of fantasy playoffs. On that weekend, the Patriots, Colts, Dolphins, and Eagles won’t play.

King notes that ESPN leagues likely will apply a cumulative approach to that postseason round, with the games stretching over two weeks and eight quarters. That will lessen the impact of such a late bye week, but for those who make fantasy a big part of their football-season reality, it becomes an important consideration when putting teams together for the 2021 fantasy season.

Another possibility would be to simply add a week to the fantasy regular season, starting the playoffs in Week 15.

It’s not an ideal situation for the fantasy crowd (which generates plenty of interest and revenue for the league), but it’s one of the byproducts of stretching the regular season over 18 weeks.

With the season extending 1 more week, this seems like the obvious decision for most leagues. Unless a league was starting their playoffs prior to week 14 before, this shouldn't be an issue for the playoffs.

It could suck if your best player is on a bye the week you are trying to make the playoffs, though.

I know it seems silly but I actually know several people who only watch NFL games b/c they play fantasy football. Funny that the NFL's greed always has the side effect of chip chip chipping away at their potential fanbase.

Before I played fantasy, I didn't watch anything other than the Saints.

We use CBS and this will definitely cause some debates. I’m not even sure of a practical solution. The potential ‘ESPN league’ solution is not a very good one.

I’m guessing the NFL didn’t fully think of this impact. Silly that they should although also obvious that they should with how big fantasy is now.

Fantasy football is primarily responsible for the NFL's popularity growth over the last 20 years.

Without fantasy football the NFL would probably still be the most popular sport but not the ratings monster it is now. The NFL usually does everything they can to cater to the fantasy football crowd so its surprising they screwed up so bad.

Having that much of a disparity between teams and their bye-week is bullshite anyway.

The NFL should have one mid season bye week for every team. I know it is something that the networks would scoff at, but they can pound sand. Every team gets week 9 off. It makes the process as fair as possible for all teams.

That doesn't seem silly at all. Many of the people I know who follow the league closely only have fantasy or gambling interests.

Simple fix. Use two point scoring system for each week. One point for winning head to head match up. One point for scoring in top half of league that week. If there is a tie at the end of the season, team with most points scored moves on.

I mean he's not entirely wrong. It may not be the main reason but it is a massive part of it. There's several games ill tune into for at least a bit each week just because of the impact on my fantasy team.

Weeks 15 and 16 are the two week semifinals.

Week 17 is the Championship.

Easy.

you’d have to say that fantasy everything else has grown too... Baseball fantasy is just as big but it hasn’t helped that grow

This will screw up 12 team leagues who have 3 rounds of playoffs. Now they will have to do weeks 15-17 and the championship game will have the potential of having important players sitting if their team(s) are locked into the playoffs. This was always intentionally avoided by starting fantasy playoffs around Week 13 or 14. Though Leagues with 2 rounds of playoffs should be ok with week 15-16 fantasy playoffs still.

Last week of NFL Regular Season is Week 18, which is when you don't want to play fantasy.

Fantasy playoffs should run Week 15, 16, and 17. I don't think you have to worry about teams sitting players 2 weeks in advance.

This isn't an issue for Fantasy.

Still supports a 6 team or 8 team playoff.
