U of H comes in at #194.

Does the Big 12 pass on them because of academics?

Does it help/hurt if other schools being considered moved up or down in the rankings?

they pass on them hoping Herman takes another job .

no one in B12 wants to see Houston wrapped in P5 mantle, recruiting Houston area.

Texas Tech is 176. I think they are the lowest in the B12?

EDA: It appears WVU is lower than Tech.

No, but they can certainly use it as an excuse.

Right, but they won't actually pass on them because of academics, which is what I thought OP was asking

The University of Houston actually is one of the few expansion options that has an endowment (approx. $790 million) comparable to other Big 12 institutions. It also places reasonably well in the Times Higher Education and Shanghai Jiaotong international rankings, both of which are focused on research metrics that actually matter.

Although the general public obsesses over the US News rankings, few within higher education really care about them.

Presidents might not, and its debatable, care about USNWR rankings but they do care about academics.

Really hope they pick Tulane. It'd be nice to have 2 power 5 schools in Louisiana.

Tulane and their minor league stadium will never be picked for the Big 12. Tulane made their stupid decision back in the 1960s. Let them wallow in that forever.

Tulane's endowment is in the 1.3B range.

they could play in the dome or just expand yulman to 40k+. most b12 stadiums aren't like most sec stadiums. outside of texas and ou, most b12 stadiums are right around or under 50k.

Athletics trumps academics in this case. Top 40 ranking and bottom 10 in sports isn't going to turn heads.

Of course they do. My argument is simply that the US News rankings don't play a role in evaluating academic quality. The methodology is almost entirely focused on the quality of undergraduate students, which is a metric very few research universities care about.

Endowment funds, research grant money, membership in prestigious academies, and publications/journal citations are all far more important. By those much more important metrics, the University of Houston is actually an average fit for the Big 12. Cincinnati, SMU, and BYU would be slightly more prestigious. Rice is world class. USF, UCF, and Colorado State are below the Big 12 average.

Yep, other than UT and OU, they are all under 62,000. Lowest, according to Wikipedia, is TCU at 45k. I think Tulane planned for potential expansion of the new stadium in the design.

tulane would easily be in the top half of the b12 after 3 recruiting cycles of being in a p5 conf.

a lot of talent that plays out of state would stay home. would actually hurt some of the sec schools who sign our 3 stars that didn't get an lsu offer. hell, if lsu keeps it up, they would probably start snagging their recruits too.
