Some computer polls use data from the previous year to smooth out irregularities caused by a lack of data in the current season. If you're going to talk about computer polls for this season, it's best to leave those out.

And of course always leave out proprietary polls that don't reveal their methodology

A poll that has two undefeated teams, from the same conference, separated by 10 spots.

I would love to know their methodology.

I have Clemson 10 spots higher than Florida State fyi.

School - winning % - opponents' winning % - opponents' opponents' winning %
Clemson - 1.000 - .667 - .574
Florida State - 1.000 - .375 - .451

Not that hard. "Same conference" means nothing.

yeah, I'm not sure what your list of polls that you "rely" on contains... I was just speaking in reference to the massive poll of polls in the OP

That's why the average of those different polls balances out and gives a certain perspective.

It's most fun clicking on polls that have irregularities and seeing what those polls tell you about why teams are ranked a certain way.

For instance, one of the polls on there ( Annar) has Utah 41st and Ohio State 15th, and Baylor first. So I clicked it and it says:

quote:

The Annar Rankings are calculated by comparing yardage statistics (yards per game, yards per rush attempt, yards per pass attempt, etc.) of each team with the average yardage statistics from their opponents defense and comparing these numbers recursively until all teams are "connected". The Annar Rankings do not care who won the game, what the score was, turnovers, injuries, game location or special teams play. The rankings aren't a list of who the best football teams are from top to bottom but rather a list of what teams consistently outperform their opponents (and their opponents' opponents, etc.) average yardage stats. Don't take it to mean that because team X is rated #7 and team Y is rated #28 that team X would be the odds on favorite to win a head to head matchup because football games come down to more than who gains the most yards. It's not better or worse than any other ranking system but rather is meant to give some insights on the overall strenghth of teams assuming the turnovers average out, key players stay healthy, kickers don't shank short field goals and most importantly red zone offense and defense.

That tells a story, but isn't a great indicator of who should be ranked where since yards do matter in football, points matter.

It's just fun and interesting.
