Rule of verticality.
You can go straight up and if there is body contact but all ball, it's not a foul. Contact almost always initiated by the offensive player in those cases

Yeah I mean it was a nasty block, but he fouled him with the body. As you've pointed out, he jumped from left of center of the restricted area and blocked the shot near the edge of the goal on the right side. If his body doesn't make contact, a no call and legit block would have been the proper call.
Foul or not, Toronto still picked up momentum there.

That doesn't apply when you jump forward no matter how straight up your arms are.
