They did run in the Nationwide series a couple years ago at Watkins Glen I believe under the rain with tread tires.

because it's a road track.

I don't want to be going 175 MPH in a car I am doing my best to hold on with a dry track

They ran a sprint cup race 5-7 years ago with some prototype treaded tires. I want to say it was at Pocono. It rained the whole weekend.

They had them available at an exhibition race in Japan in '97, but it was dry. They were available for some years after that for road races, but they were never used in a race. LINK

Sprint Cup will have rain tires allowed for 2015 at the two road courses.

Xfinity has used them a few times at road courses. They were pretty crashy.
