these new rules make it exciting (and prevents jimmie from winning as much.. thank god)

Something tells me he and Knaus will find a way to whip everybody at this system too, and in short order

Of course, that could also be my bias talking.......

And agree that the final race in Miami blows

I'm just kinda "meh" on it, more than anything. It's never been an uber-exciting track.

Would love to see the championship decided on a plate track or short track like Richmond (although there's no way RIR gives up their spot as last race before the Chase, I know).

Between him and Hendrick, the reason I hate JJ.

Hendrick is a criminal.
Knaus is a dick and I am convinced, a cheater.

The hate is my sustenance

And what great crew chief DOESN'T cheat?

He IS a dick, though, I'll give you that

JJ is impossible to hate as a person, though.

I agree that Hendrick is a criminal, but I don't hold it against his drivers because who wouldn't want to race his cars?

Knaus is a cheater, but so is everyone else on pit road.

Reason why I'm for it: It makes teams have more incentive to win to qualify.
Reason why I'm against it: Some jackass can win at Daytona or Talladega with the restrictor plate and qualify, or move to the next round in the chase with the Talladega fall race.

That being said, this eliminates the 48/18 style of aiming to finish fifth every race and puts them in the position to win a race or two, which they are more than capable of doing. But I'm not a fan of win one race and you qualify.

I dunno. Willing to watch a season of it and see how it goes. That last race at Homestead will be legit though.

I used to like jJ a lot more when he first came around. I just don't care for him as a driver anymore but whatever him and knaus are doing is deadly

Fair enough

I personally like more guys gunning for the checkers, but I do see your point as well.

Only flaw of a finishing-position based points system: the better drivers can afford to points race most weeks and they will do that if they can get away with it. And I don't blame them, tbh. Less risky that way.

In the past 5 seasons, Jimmie has won 26 races and Kyle has won 16 races. That's 23% of all races.

I just point at Trevor Bayne. While that Daytona win was absolutely awesome for him and the fans, was he really ready to cut it out that year in the chase with the rest of the guys? Nah bruh.

Lets say this year that Michael Waltrip wins the Daytona based off of planning to run 2 or 3 races all season long, but now he's thrust into the chase - does he go through with the playoff format and race an extra 12 or does he 1 and done in the first week of the Chase?

And it's not really a shot at them, but in Chad Knaus' own words he aims for a top 5 every week, knowing that will likely win a championship for his team. This takes that right out of play until they get their first win, even more during the Chase.

Oh no, I agree with ya, Zantrix! If anything, maybe the plate wins shouldn't be auto-qualifiers.

That'd be a start.

As a side note, I've kind of mellowed on the drivers I used to loathe. Couldn't STAND Smoke or Junebug in the early/mid 00s, but I kinda like 'em now in a weird sort of way.

frick (most of) Jr.'s fanbase, though

I can't imagine the carnage that is going to happen in the last five laps of that Talladega Fall race...possibly 11 drivers that haven't qualified for the next round?

That format blew chunks, I'm sorry.

I realize that the old format was not very exciting, but you can't argue that it wasn't the most fair system for the drivers. Honestly, the problem with NASCAR now is that they think that they need to hype up a championship like other sports do every year. Racing isn't that type of sport though. It's about winning the next race or the biggest races of the year. I really don't care about who wins the championship, I care about seeing my favorite drivers win when I go watch them race at the nearest track. The champion is just a formality awarded to the driver who ran the best over the year, not the grand prize. If someone wants to run around grabbing top 5's to win the championship without getting a win, that's fine. I doubt he's more satisfied than the driver with 8 new trophies on the mantel.

If you want to see drivers race each other hard for the win, increase the winnings for each race. The top drivers make so much money now, I doubt that they even think about it much anymore.
