I hate the Red Hat Guy. You know, the sideline guy who signals TV timeout info. He adds an hour to game time, totally disrupting flow of the game and is at least partly responsible for people leaving early.

So here's my solution: Just like they put virtual graphics on the field now (yellow first down line, etc.), they can place a virtual billboard on the field, changing it every minute or so. No timeouts for commercials (which people at home don't watch anyway). Just the natural flow of the game, like it used to be before they were all on TV. The network gets a game in with an hour less air time, certainly saving money on production costs. The only downside is having to look at an ad while watching the game. Of course, if you don't like it, you can go to Tiger Stadium and watch the game live, TV timeout-free, Red Hat Guy-free, in under 3 hours!

Yeah. The networks don't even like ad revenue anymore

They'll get ad revenue from the billboards.

I think he is saying that the graphics would be ads. For the network to make a profit without commercials.

Yeah they'd do that for one year and when you were accustomed to it they'd add back the tv timeouts too

Sometimes players need the break to rehydrate to avoid cramping and injuries

Remove the 3rd quarter IMO.

Just play quarters 1, 2 and 4.

I actually enjoy football games a lot, so I am glad they are 3+ hours long.

It's not that the games are too long for me, it's that the TV timeouts break up the flow of the game. This would fix that.

I agree, i hate the TV timouts and how they affect the flow of the game.

Unfortunately I do not expect the TV networks to avail themselves of your suggestion anytime soon.

In tHe short term there is one option you might explore

Three words for ya

that's stupid

the smart thing to do is just play the first 59 minutes

Saints would be 2-0

Great idea. Commercials have really ruined the flow of the game.

So digital billboards that 100,000k people watch will replace revenue from 1.5 to 2 million viewers for an avg. ESPN game? You could add corporate sponsorships on jerseys, end zones and 50 yard line and still not makeup for the lost revenue of no tv commercials. The problem with your idea is TV content (sports, dramas, comedies, etc.) in the USA exists only to sell commercials. Now you could argue a 10-15 second "live" commercial presented by a sideline reporter, celebrity (Shaq), coach, etc would be watched by more people since a lot of people go pee, grab a beer, etc, during regular commercials. And this would speed up the game some. But most companies want to control their message and would still want pre-recorded commercials.

They could utilize the white area around the field where the sidelines are as "boards" similar to hockey. Just have it viewed on TV and swap the ads out periodically.

Ha, DVR. I actually do DVR the game when I don't attend, and I start watching the game an hour late, zipping thru the commercials. Wife can't stand it. I have to make her promise not to tell me the score.
