What do you think is the most egregious example of irrational behavior in coaching(of a major sport) that happens frequently?

a) punting on most 4th downs
b) basketball coaches pulling players with early foul trouble
c) pitching "Closer" in the 9th inning regardless of whether there are more essential at-bats he could pitch.
d) other

I say B.

Throwing the fade on "and Goal" situations. Just seems to be such a low percentage play that consistently gets called.

Depends on player, but yeh I feel like this too. Another option on this list should be not QB sneaking on 1st 2nd and 3rd and goal from inside the 1.

I understand that and in the regular season, I don't even mind. But in the postseason, it is pathetic.

Last year, Braves season ended after Dodgers got a 2 RBI hit in the 8th. One of the most statistically dominant pitchers in baseball history sat on the bench while Braves protected a 1 run lead with 2 guys on base. Kimbrel never played in the game.

Or LSU in the 8th inning against Houston.

Switching to the prevent defense during a team's 2 minute drill when your standard d has shut them down all game.

Agree with that. As for the fade, nothing more frustrating than seeing a team march down the field by running it and then seeing one or two fade passes when they get inside the 10.

This actually got brought up in the Detroit/New York game thread. It seems like a wasted play that close to the endzone. I think the slant and a simple TE out route is the most underrated play in the redzone.

A. Especially on 4th and 1. I would go for it 99% of the time.

Agreed, however I don't think this happens as much as people think. A lot of it is the offense switching to their desperation offense. Offenses become incredibly hard to stop when they take 4 downs to throw down field and aren't risk-averse to an interception/

Brings up another illogical decision. Running the ball in the NFL. It's a low payoff play kept alive by weightless adages like "establish the run." Its pretty obvious how ridiculously hard it is to stop a team from getting a first on 4 passing attempts.

Statistics of game theory says it is worth more points on average to go for it unless it is fourth and long,
