More triple crown questions

I'll admit I'm ignorant about horse racing.
1. It seems almost every year we have a horse going for the triple crown with only the Belmont left. But it's rare for them to actually win it. What makes the Belmont that much more difficult for a horse to win the other 2/3rds but not the Belmont?
2. Do the horses retire after they win a triple crown? Why did the dominant Secretariat only win it once? I know they have limited time to run, but do they only race for a year then call it quits?

1) it's longer than the first 2
2) why risk injury when you can stud him and make tons of money? The triple crown races are only open to 3-year-olds so that's why they only run once.

Belmont has tight turns and is a mile and half. Plus, grueling grind of 3 races in a short time.
Majority of Triple Crown race winners usually retire quickly to stud.

Simple enough.
Gracias.

I think the triple crown races are only for 3 year olds.
Some guy on espn was talking about him racing at the breeders cup. He compared it to basketball where the horses in the triple crown are like 18-20 year old college players but the breeders cup have the grown men in it.

1. it's longer than the first 2. also it's the third race in 5 weeks. which is a lot in todays horse racing world.
2. triple crown races are only for 3YOs. You only get one try.
There is only one horse in horse racing history that won the triple crown and retired as a 3YO and that is in fact Secretariat. Affirmed, Seattle Slew, Citation, Whirlaway, Count Fleet, War Admerial, Omaha, Assault all ran as 4Yos. AP will retire after this year as well. Generally they run until they are at lest 4 so they can take on older horses and sometimes even longer than that.

It's uphill

He will be slaughtered for his lean, succulent meat.

Thought the owner said AP will run a few more races (Haskil) and the Breeders Cup at Keeneland.

That's the plan if he stays healthy and in good shape.
Tickets are already sold out for Saturday's races. Not sure if they always sell out this early, but.

I've heard horse racing experts say that's when they're considered to be in their prime.

no.
a good 4YO will beat a good 3YO 8 out of 10 times.
As good as american pharaoh is, i'm pretty sure he would be slaughtered by shared belief (4YO) at this very point in both of their careers. AP hasn't seen anything remotely as good as shared belief yet.
The avg beyer speed figure for AP in his triple crown races was about 105. The avg speed figure for a grade 1 4YO is going to be 110+. Shared belief got a 111 in his last win. Quality Road was clocking 120+ beyers as a 4YO in cluding a win in the Donn handicap. Ghostzapper ran a 129 as a 4YO.
generally speaking 3YO's don't catch up to 4YO's until the end of the year, which is why 3YO's run in 3YO restricted races like the derby, preakness, belmont, etc. the breeders cup classic is really the first time 3YOs get to run against 4Yos

Ok, I stand corrected.

Which is what made a horse like Rachel Alexandra so popular / good. she was a 3YO FILLY beating older HORSES. that's just not done.
alot has to do with pedigree and what not, some mature earlier than others, but generally speaking a horse is going to be his best from 4-6.

Interesting.
I wonder how 3 year old races then became the biggest draw.

That's what I was wondering too

This is the part that is hard to grasp for me...given that there is a couple of weeks between every race.
