More Shaq to the Hornets rumors...

ESPN's Marc Stein addresses the topic poorly....
The notion that the Hornets and Suns could come to an agreement on a Shaquille O'Neal deal, similar to what we said recently when O'Neal started dropping hints about wanting to be traded to Dallas, can't be described at this stage as much more than a helpful suggestion from the Big Tweeter.
However …
O'Neal's interest in a return to the NBA territory closest to his LSU roots is even more genuine than we thought. Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News wrote recently that O'Neal "thinks" he's going to New Orleans in a deal headlined by Chandler. I've since heard that Shaq was not at all shy about telling Chris Paul what a great arrangement that would be when they were Western Conference teammates at All-Star Weekend.
What we don't have to date is any firm indication that the teams have even discussed Shaq scenarios.
Suns president Steve Kerr has spoken openly of his desire to inject his front line with mobility and athleticism, but Chandler is clearly still playing hurt in New Orleans' first-round series with Denver after Oklahoma City rescinded its trade for the rangy 7-footer in February because of concerns about a long-standing toe injury.
Then there's the obstacle of the teams' respective financial constraints on top of any health concerns. Once first-round draft picks are included on next season's payrolls, New Orleans will be an estimated $8 million over the luxury-tax line. Phoenix will be an estimated $9 million over. Both teams are hoping for trades this summer that would save more money than making this sort of deal would allow.
If the Suns ultimately did decide that they were willing to take on Chandler's contract -- which runs one season longer than Shaq's -- that would still require New Orleans to gamble on O'Neal for a season in exchange for the right to shed Chandler's $13.2 million salary in 2010-11. If those two conditions were realized, there are a couple of trade scenarios that aren't completely out of the realm of possibility:
1. Chandler, Rasual Butler and Devin Brown (assuming Brown picks up his $1.1 million option for next season) for O'Neal. Such a deal couldn't happen until after July 1 because Brown is ineligible to be traded until he can pick up the option.
2. The version that makes a trade more even cap-wise for the Hornets: Chandler, Butler and Antonio Daniels for Shaq and Alando Tucker.

Obviously this would be incredible for the Hornets, but why the frick would the Suns trade a super-valuable expiring $20MM contract who can still play at All Star levels?
The Suns could do way better than Chandler/Daniels/filler.
The only way this makes sense for Phoenix is the following:
David West ($9MM - underpaid 4), Antonio Daniels ($6MM - expiring), Rasual Butler ($3MM - underpaid quality 2).
This makes sense for both sides. Then the Hornets could shed Chandler to get under the luxury and shoot to reload big-time next offseason.

DO IT NAO!!!! Draft a backup PG/scorer and we will be ok.
Daniels sucks and Butler is terribly inconsistent.

Did you see my follow up?
The Suns would NEVER take that deal. It makes no sense. Shaq is arguably the most valuable trade piece in the NBA right now. A $20MM expiring who sells tickets and can still play.

I don't know why they'd do it.
Why did Memphis take Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol?

The intriguing thing about getting Shaq for the Hornets is the following...
A) They could then trade Tyson for nothing and not worry about it. Just free that money up.
B) Shaq could conceivably realize that the Hornets would be stacked for 2010/2011 and decide to pull a Malone and re-up for below market value and then try to convince a Dwayne Wade to come play in NOLA.
C) Peja's expiring $16MM that season could bring in another unreal piece and the Hornets could conceivably have the most talented NBA roster since the Malone/Kobe/Payton/Shaq Lakers. We know that didn't pan out entirely but it was still fun.

Get your head out of the clouds young man.

All I know is if we can get one of the big 5 in the 2010 class and somehow still have CP3, DWest, and Shaq...then....

Id like shaq to finish on a good note. unless the hornets get some better players he shouldnt come. their roster sucks IMO.

Shaq had an fluke injury free season, we would be playing with fire as far as adding him to be competitive. Not that Chandler has been healthy any way either.
but Shaq played in the most games since 99-00 season. It was a fluke.

Well we're not going to be good next year anyway.
My point is that since we need to blow it up regardless, let's blow it up for Shaq and have some good times.
We'd probably be like an 8th seed or so but if the season went decent the Shaq re-signing on the cheap with his "hometown" team for limited minutes in a Mourning/Mutumbo type role (not really but whatever) isn't totally unrealistic.

trust me, im not against it at all. Im just not sure he can stay healthy again like he did this year.
shoot if he does, we would prob be a better team. I jut dont see him playing more than 50-55 games

the trade would put my arse in the seats for quite a few games. And I'm pretty sure a lot of others would follow.
The trade seems far fetched since the Hornets make moves that really don't make since. (other than CP3's new contract) Examples Posey's big money contract and Peja's ginormous contract.
Don't get me wrong I would LOVE to bring the Big Aristotle to NOLA but not getting my hopes up.

a little off topic, but what the hell do the Suns' trainers know/ do that others don't? Grant Hill played ALL 82 GAMES this year, at 30 mpg.

I thought that the other day. Not about Grant Hill though. They must have some secret drinking water.

Because you are seeing with a very clouded vision. Shaq said so this year, he does not see himself making another all star after this year. He said he was pretty sure that was his last one. His career is going down hill. Wade carried the Heat to their title Shaq was just a piece. Shaq without a doubt had a great season this year which I think surprised many. He probably had to work hard in the off season to play at that level this year though. The suns are going younger which they need. Two of their bigger pieces Shaq/Nash are old. At some point you have to sit back and realize it is time to pull back a bit and build for the future. They are at that point.
I would say it is a good move for the hornets because what they have now won't get it done. They have a financial problem where they can't really do much this off season anyway. Are they getting better? Honestly I am not sure with Shaq's age and him saying himself he does not expect to make another all star. However, his contract expires sooner which opens the door for making future moves sooner. Worst case it is a one season test to see if it works.

of course, everyone knows Grant Hill drinks Sprite
and I'd go to my first hornets game if Shaq wore teal.

i don't think you fully understand his point. the expiring contract alone makes shaq worth more than anything the hornets have to offer, it really doesn't matter how well shaq will play in the future
