"Momentum" and the Blackout

So a popular meme since last night was that the blackout took momentum from the Ravens and gave the 49ers new life. I'm curious, if that's true, as the always brilliant and insightful Stephen A Smith cvlaims, and not an just a coincidence, why did the 49ers come back after being down 20-0 vs Atlanta with out a black out? Why was Baltimore's first play after the BO a 15 yd pass completeion?

It's a good thing Baltimore still won because had they not that black out would have become infamous and the game would be forever called the Blackout Bowl or something stupid.

It did effect Balts MOJO. But I had a feeling SF was gonna make a run anyway. Jim is too good a coach for his team to lay down and get whipped like that.I just feel if there was NO lights out that Balt would have put the game away before the 4th quarter started. But Hey.. Maybe CBS said we do NOT want a blowout and told someone to [MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN]... Ya NEVER KNOW.

How could a 34 minute delay NOT change momentum? Do you know what "momentum" means?

How so? First play back, the 49ers did not get a first. Balt first play a 15 yds pass. What killed Atlanta's MOJO? There is unfortunately no way to prove it, but it happens all the time, way to often to say that the black out was the reason, it's just an easy excuse. Makes for a nice story but that's about it.

But it's impossible to know what would have happened in the absence of the blackout

"Correlation not equaling causation" applies to your argument as well. The fact that SF made a comeback against Atlanta doesn't disprove the argument that a delay, a variable not included in the Atlanta sample, was the reason for SF's comeback against Baltimore.

SF looked shellshocked up until that point but after the break, they regrouped and started making some plays to get momentum on their side, while Baltimore clearly just wasn't playing with the same intensity.

I'm sure that sitting on the sideline for 88 minutes affected focus, play calling, stamina, etc. which were a contributing factors
The fact that they got to catch their breath and refocus after the kick return WAS HUGE

Its just being a football player just coming off a 30 minuite break THEY KNEW was coming and then going into ANOTHER 30 min break you didn't know was coming. The Ravens DOMINATED the 1st half and ran back the opening kickoff for a TD. The VIBES on that bench must have been going CRAZY. BUT then all the air seemed to come out when the delay hits and gives the 49ers even MORE time to get their shite together. That's all I am saying.

A delay in itself can slow the momentum of a team, but it doesn't automatically give it to the other team.
What got the 49ers back into the game was forcing a punt when Ray Rice was tackled a yard short of the 1st down. And it's impossible to definitively attribute that stop to the power outage since it was the 49ers first defensive series of the half.
