Still curious why the Nats are in on Pap, who has said he only wants to close. I mean they could move Storen but they did that before to him and it almost ruined him

MLB Rumors:

quote:

2:15pm: Talks between the Nationals and Phillies are “very complicated” and the sides still have plenty to work out, Jim Bowden of ESPN.com tweets.

Local 'insider' in a comments section mentioned Michael Taylor and Ben Revere being part of the complications. Take that FWIW.

Then take over for Span after this year guess. He doesn't hit FA until 2018.

I think Taylor's ceiling is Andrew Jones and hate to lose him if this is the case. Nats do need a leadoff guy after this year if Span walks and they ease Turner in at the bottom of the lineup.

That is a pretty high ceiling for a guy already 24.... I don't think Taylor ever becomes that good.

I read last the Nationals asked the Padres about Kimbrel, the Padres asked for Trea Turned in return

He and Ross for Steve f'n Souza is the biggest fleecing in a few years.

(Yeah I know the Padres got Myers, but I'm a Nats fan and don't care)

The Diamondbacks have engaged in discussions with the Reds regarding ace closer Aroldis Chapman, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports on Twitter. Cincinnati has a “huge” asking price and the chats could just be “due diligence,” per the report.

Reds starter Mike Leake is on Detroit’s radar if they choose to buy, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports on Twitter.

Marlins infielder/outfielder Martin Prado increasingly seems available, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter links). An executive from another club says that the Fish appear to be “open to at least contemplate” a deal, which seemingly indicates slightly more availability than we heard yesterday (when Miami was said to be interested only for a sizable offer). Sherman notes that the Yankees and Mets could join the Royals with interest in Prado as a secondary option to Ben Zobrist (who is expected to be dealt in short order).

Padres righty Tyson Ross remains a hotly-pursued name on the market, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported yesterday. He’s drawn interest from teams like the Blue Jays, Astros, Dodgers, and Rangers, per the report. Expectations are that Ross would require a significant return, and Heyman notes that the team would likely prefer to move other pitching assets.

The Phillies are notifying teams with interest in lefty Cole Hamels that they would like to receive their best offers tomorrow, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports. It’s unclear what the team’s decisionmaking process or timeline would be from that point, but there is at least some possibility of a deal occurring before Hamels makes his scheduled start on Thursday.

Miami saw what Zobrist went for now Prado is increasingly available. They're late to the party.

I enjoy how the Yankees are interested, they just traded the guy at the beginning of the year.

The Nationals are nearing a deal to acquire closer Jonathan Papelbon from the Phillies, Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post reports on Twitter. Earlier today, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that there was a deal in the works, but both Jim Bowden and Jayson Stark of ESPN reported that there were hurdles to be cleared before a deal was struck. It would seem, based on Svrluga’s report, that those hurdles have been addressed or are nearly cleared.

Nats boards saying it's done and he's not even in the stadium in Toronto. Rumor is a 10-15 level prospect and a AAAA-level MLB arm (guessing someone like Treinen)

Werth and Zimmerman both off the DL and in the lineup tonight. First time Werth, Zimm, and Rendon will be in the lineup together all season, including Spring Training.

Back on topic, I don't mind Papelbon, but hope there's nothing to the Taylor for Revere rumors. I think Taylor will round into a very good player. More than capable of playing all three OF positions, may strike out more than Revere, but has more power.

4:54pm: Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that if the trade is completed, part of the agreement is that Papelbon will close for the Nationals, and he will be signed for the 2016 season. Presumably, that means that the Nationals will guarantee his 2016 option up front.

Ugh. I hate this. Second time this has happened to Drew, and the first go-round ended with him damaged and affectively in Closers Anonymous in AAA.

This only works for me if the pitcher traded was De Los Santos, only because I really, really want to be able to say that Rizzo traded 1/2 of Ross Detweiler for Jonathan Papelbon.

I'm waiting on actual confirmation of the deal being a done deal... also what is Philadelphia getting back.
