In the final round of the J Bay open

The shark — officials later said it was a great white shark — knocked him off his board and into the water, but Fanning escaped unharmed. His leash was separated from his board and he swam away before rescue boats scooped him out of the water

Surfing looks like so much fun but my goodness I would shite my trunks.

I wonder how much more at risk surfers are to shark attacks than the average person.

A large amount, but there are many more times where surfers are within a few feet/meters of sharks and nothing bad happens. Most of the time they don't even realize the shark is there.

Percentage wise probably a lot but there are still less than 100 shark attacks worldwide each year, and less than 20 deaths, so you could still surf every second of your life and have WAAAYYY under a .001% chance of being attacked.

Nice commentary by those two announcers.

"You can see a little splash...oh...HOLY shite. Excuse me."

"Looks like Fanning needed some assistance..."

Sharks tend to attack swimmers, not surfers. Generally speaking.

I really don't think that was a full-on committed attack from that shark.

I think it was in a bit of an exploring mood.

Yep luckily. Looks like the bottom of his board is yum yum yellow, too.
