I'm genuinely surprised they made money on basketball.

The Ben Simmons hype caused basketball to turn a profit last year. That feat won't be replicated in 2016-17 because of the dismal year and the awful attendance.

Did you see that your football revenue dropped from $111 million to $70 million?

Yeah, I saw that post where he projected that A&M would start running a deficit once the capital campaign winds down. But I didn't write it.

Only eight athletics programs at public universities broke even or had net operating income on athletics each year from 2005-2009, according to data provided by USA Today to the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.

Georgia
LSU
Penn State
Iowa
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Texas

and...Michigan.

4 Big10 schools
2 Big12 Schools
2 SEC schools

No Pac-12 schools...

Which makes TOTAL sense. Pac-12 schools fund about a million sports for women and a million minor sports for men.

How the hell does a P5 school go into debt with its athletic dpt?

Because they have to pay for every sport besides football and men's basketball too

Sounds like Michigan hired a good accountant to show a loss.

The fact that a majority of college athletic programs are unprofitable is what makes Title 9 so ridiculous. If the small sports aren't self-sustainable then why must we keep throwing money at them?

The feminists will hate me for my opinion, but if no one cares for women's volleyball, rifle, etc. then what's the point?

Melt over.

Then why don't we get rid of every single athletic program that doesn't turn a profit?

Because these things shouldn't exist to make money. Which is why that basketball and football are so out of whack. They are basically a minor league and a business to these schools where every single other athletic program isn't

This is lost on most people (apparently even people on a sports message board). This is the biggest reason I think the "pay the players" argument is absurd.

Athletes already get free tuition (which can easily be 40K+ some places), granted many don't care about getting a degree, and elite level coaching/training. All of that would be 100k+ a year if you just tried to go out and buy it.

A&M football made 70 million dollars last year and that was after they accounted for the expense of scholarships

women's volleyball,

More girls play volleyball than basketball. They sold out the women's volleyball final four in a 19,000 seat arena two years ago.

There's better examples than women's volleyball.

Good for them. How will UTSA pay their players since they don't make mega bucks? Also only paying players that participate in money making sports won't go over very well at all.

does UTSA have their football program basically be a minor league that generates millions of dollars for them? No

I don't think players should be given a salary. I just think players should be allowed to make money off their likeness and should be given a piece of these ridiculous media deals

I actually looked at the numbers and they turned a profit in 2015 too. They receive $2MM or so per year from the NCAA that gives them room to turn a profit. I didn't realize that was commonplace.

In regards to Michigan, probably so.

Most other schools are losing money on athletics, which raises the question of will the arms race in college athletics slow down soon?
