FYI, this matchup is not considered a rivalry, certainly not for ND, and the matchup doesn't really have much history at all. ND ended the series recently to play better opponents and Michigan came crawling back to strengthen their soft schedule.

Michigan and Notre Dame last played each other regularly until 1898 and didn't resume regular play again until 1978. ND's true rivals are USC, Navy and Michigan State.

Michigan coaches and athletic directors, most notably Fielding Yost, were virulently anti-Catholic and refused to play a Catholic school for most of the 20th century and refused to add ND to the Big Ten when it was founded. Yost was also an active member of the KKK.

Congratulations on the 0.5 National championships in 100+ years. I'm sure Michigan fans are happy to tell you how proud they are of all their Rose bowl losses.

I wouldn't call a 37-0 ND win too crazy to end the series, unless you're impressed by Michigan's negative total yardage.

Wow Michigan has insane schedules for the foreseeable future.

9 Big Televen games, punctuated by a loss to Ohio State or whatever Pac-12 team is in the Rose Bowl? Not exactly murderer's row.

A few personal favorites:

2006. Charlie Weis declares that any team with him as a head coach will have a decided schematic advantage. Notre Dame goes in ranked #2 in the nation, and loses to Michigan at home 47-21 in a game that wasn't as close as the score.

2010: Denard Robinson introduces himself to Notre Dame and college football in emphatic fashion. Notre Dame hits a miraculous 95 yard TD pass late, but Robinson leads Michigan down to win the game in the final minute.

2011: One of the best endings to a college football game I have ever seen.

ND should play Arkansas instead, at least that game won't be a drag on SOS, as Michigan inevitably loses their usual 4-5 games.

2005: Michigan, ranked #2 in nation, loses at home to Charlie Weis in his second game ever as a head coach with basically the same team that went 5-7 the year before.

2012: Denard Robinson commits 6 turnovers, throwing 5 INTs in 5 consecutive passes, including a TD pass to Manti Teo, and loses to an Irish team led by noodle arm Tommy Rees when Golston was lost for the season earlier in the game.

2014: Irish win 37-0, and Irish athletic director cancels future games with Michigan much to surprise of clueless Michigan AD, because ND needs to play consistently better teams more appropriate for team with a national presence.

I thought that series was a casualty of Notre Dame joining the ACC in other sports and playing 5ish games against ACC teams every year.

I just looked up some Michigan and ND bowl history.

Michigan is (21-23) in all of their bowl games. (8-12) in the Rose Bowl.

Notre Dame is (17-18) in all of their bowl games.

Michigan also leads the series (21-17-1)

It partially that and partially the B1G expanding to nine conference games.

It was also in no small part due to the fact that Dave Brandon was a real turd, and Swarbrick wanted nothing to do with him. I think even Michigan people would agree with that. Once Brandon was ousted, the series was pretty much inevitable to begin again.

A big caveat to that was that we didn't play in bowl games until 1970 (with the exception of the 1925 Rose Bowl against Stanford) - the priests who head the university had an archaic notion that they would interfere with academics, so quite a good chunk of our best and most dominant teams never had the opportunity to play in the post-season.

Rockne only played in the aforementioned single Rose Bowl. Leahy never got to play in a bowl. Three of Parseghian's best teams didn't play in a bowl.
