LINK with video

quote:

A truly amazing spring training lowlight from Mets-Astros this afternoon, as an A.J. Reed ball hit past Yoenis Cespedes stuck at the base of the wall. It didn’t wedge under anything; it wasn’t trapped, or unreachable; it wasn’t obstructed in any way that would have warranted the umpire calling dead ball and awarding a ground-rule double.

Cespedes just took one look at it and said nah.

quote:

“How am I ever going to get this ball? Better try to call time.”

A confused Reed circled the bases, and was given a home run, because, you know, the ball was just sitting there on the dirt. An umpire jogged out to explain to Cespedes why the ball was still in play. When Cespedes protested, the ump showed him what he might have tried doing.

If you look at it in slow mo you can kinda of see the ball disappear for a split second as if it went under the padding and came back out.

He didn't want to ruin the crease in his pants. Completely understandable

It's gamesmanship that didn't work out for him. Like has already been mentioned, he's trying to hold the runner to only a double. Outfielders get this call the majority of the time. It has nothing to do with being lazy. That said, those pictures are hilarious.

Ya I'm going to disagree. With Cespedes' arm, a slower player running, and the fact that it is spring training, nobody is going to try to leg out a triple. Don't even try to feed me that bullshite.

I might could give you the split second disappearance that caused him to pause, but instead of picking it up when he saw it again he doubled down and tried to pretend the ball wasn't playable. You think he pulls that shite in the World Series last year? No. This was definitely laziness.

I've seen it before. Big risk but usually doesn't work out. Meh. It's spring training.

Man look, I hear you... it's funny to me too, I mean it's strange... it's strange to me too, but we're talking about practice man, we're not even talking about the game... the actual game, when it matters... We're talking about practice …

Maybe he had a new cigar in his back pocket and didn't want to break it.

Hate people that do this. Try not to pick up the ball on purpose to try and leave it as a double. Cespesdes 100% deserves to look like a complete retard in this.
