How did things ever get so far?

quote:

Not a month-and-a-half ago, Conor McGregor was the greatest thing that had ever happened to the UFC, the mega-talent with the silver tongue and the crossover appeal and the marketing acumen and (most importantly) the loyalty that the promotion had always dreamed of. Every card he headlined broke gate records; every fight he fought cleared new bars for inventiveness and improbability; every press conference he took over printed money.

Now, though, Conor McGregor and his rabbis at the UFC, President Dana White and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, have drifted a thousand miles away from each other. One small but earth-shattering tweet from McGregor followed by an accusatory response from White, and the MMA world is in the midst of a Cold War.

quote:

Now we seem to have entered a new punitive phase in the UFC/McGregor dispute, with the fight promotion eager to affirm for the whole world its belief that it is bigger than any single fighter and that no fighter, no matter how big, is in a position to change the world, not for himself or for his fellow fighters. So not only is Conor McGregor off the UFC 200 card, White is now saying that the champion won’t fight in New York when the UFC returns to the state for the first time in 20 years in November. This despite the fact that a Conor McGregor fight at Madison Square Garden would bring in untold millions of dollars and take over the media in the greatest media city in the world. This despite the fact that New York City has been the adopted home of the Irish in America for 150 years, a city with Ireland in its blood and bones, a city that will welcome Conor McGregor with hungry arms. The UFC appears to be punishing Conor McGregor by punishing the people who love him most. That’s what you call a hard bargain, I guess. Negotiating the Las Vegas way.

What a complete and utter failure. McGregor is screwed. When the UFC does allow him back, it will likely either be against Diaz or RDA...either of which will kick his arse and then it is over for him.

I predict Conor will be fighting on a Fox Fight Night within 12 months trying to muster some degree of credibility back.

It was fun while it lasted I suppose...

How any dumbass chooses to fight in the UFC is beyond me. They screw over their fighters like nobodies business. It is equivalent to other pro athletes in 1943

He has a great mouthpiece. He should take it over to the WWE and make millions.

because it isn't about the fighters. We're watching UFC and they make sure we know that

RDA is no guarantee to beat McGregor, in fact Conor would be favored. Diaz beat him, and McGregor has claimed he let his own hype get to him. Diaz won the fight but it was a good fight. And while I still acknowledge Conor lost, it appeared he was taking the rematch extremely seriously.

UFC is losing on this one, they are bigger than all their fighters minus a handful of guys. Conor is one of those guys.

Well yeah, the biggest obstacle for McGregor and WWE is the fact that he can't wrestle. It takes time to learn that crap.

That wouldn't stop WWE from signing him though.

What do you mean by this? That Conor is bigger than the UFC?

ETA: I think RDA would open as the favorite, just like last time.

I'll give it a couple of months until I buy into the notion that he will not be on the card.

I think it's a done deal at this point, with Jones v Cormier II being promoted to 200.

Meh. Conor needs to know his role. The UFC has had big stars before him and they'll have big stars long after him.

What choice does he have? He can go off on his own but who is there for him to fight, and what network would distribute that fight to fans? UFC has all of the top fighters and the best distribution vessel to launch PPVs.

Conor sees what guys like Mayweather have and he wants that life, to call all of the shots. What he forgot is that UFC is a promotional company, first and foremost. Mayweather OWNS his promotional company, that's the difference. Boxing is basically a group of independent contractors so he can do that. Conor has no choice but to acquiesce if he wants to keep working.

Oh, me either. I wouldn't be completely shocked if he's miraculously on 200 again, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

What other option does an MMA fighter have? UFC is the top dog that offers the biggest paydays for its stars. I guess they can go Bellator or One FC but those promotions can't keep up monetarily with the UFC, in terms of both fight purses and endorsement deals.
