His career was between Jacksonville & Oakland. I'd say he made the best of a rough situation.

You have to feel kind of bad for guys like this (and Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, etc.) who spend their entire careers playing for shite teams.

The NFL Draft kinda sucks because of that. Props to MJD for not letting a bad team/organization ruin his career though. Lots of players (and their fans) use that as an excuse, and validly I might add. But MJD just put his head down and worked.

If he could have had at least Kurt Warner throwing to him for 10 straight seasons, dude would go down as 2nd best WR of all-time, behind Jerry Rice.

What does the NFL's retirement policy look like? I wonder if ten years nets you a particular level of retirement. If so, seems odd to retire at 9 seasons.

Two guys that you have to play the "what if" scenario with. Andre Johnson never had a good QB during his time in Houston. At least, Fitzgerald had Kurt Warner for sometime.

Always liked that dude. Wish it could've happened in a Jags uniform, but nice career nonetheless.

They could always become free agents, they took the money instead

I think you qualify for a pension if you play for 4 seasons, I could be completely wrong though.

It's their job to make money. It's the GMs job to put good pieces around them.

You can't blame a guy for wanting to make money during their short NFL careers. You can blame a GM for not getting a good QB.

MJD was the original bowling ball, not Mark Ingram.

I get what you're saying but why him? They've made it to the playoffs a few times, had some average-good years in some seasons that they didn't. And he was of course a part of that SB run.

Didn't he have a chance to leave around the time that Boldin did but decided to stay in AZ? Or am I just imagining things?

The NFL is an organization that rewards the number of active seasons in both their pension and 401k plan. The pension, which players become eligible for at age 55, gives them $470/month for each season they played. A player with 4 seasons would get $1880/month starting at age 55, for the rest of their life. But most of them stop playing long before that, and inflation is eating away the value of those pension dollars with each passing year.

The 401k is structured more generously. After their second season, players can received 2:1 matching up to $24,000 until 2014, and $28,000 after that until 2020. Without careful money management, they still might come up short of the goal and miss their contributions. Though most of us aren’t playing in the big leagues, we share a lot of the same challenges as our favorite athletes.
