Just because someone else will pay him does not make it a good argument for Detroit paying him.

The options are let him walk or pay him.

He's been in the league for 8 seasons and hasn't won a playoff game, this strategy isn't exactly working out either through 8 years.

So what would you do?

He's a 29yo top 10ish QB.

Lets overpay Stafford and hamstring our roster for the next 10 years and lay down at the bottom of the division.

That team made the playoffs last year and would have gone 2-14/3-13 without Stafford.

Did make the playoffs, I was wrong in laying at the bottom of the division, at least for the 2016 season.

People keep saying get a game manager at a cheap price and build around that.

Truth of the matter is, that's just not the reality. Look at the SB winning QBs in the past ten years. Only Russell Wilson and Flacco fit the bill, and even those don't grow on trees.
Well technically Peyton Manning fit the bill too, but that's not because he was cheap....

We're going to see just how well this strategy of not paying a competent QB works for the Redskins. They currently have Colt McCoy and 6th rounder Nate Sudfeld ready to take over.

And you said one reason they should pay him is because someone else will. You can have many reasons you feel they should pay them. Whether another team will should not be one of them. Why would it?

I'd never make a QB I felt no confidence in leading my team to a title the highest paid QB in the league.

I'd work to trade him.

And before you say, "well good luck finding a competent QB" I'll just remind you once more that Stafford has been around for 8 years and Detroit has not had success with him, so the Stafford strategy hasn't exactly led to success either. That's not the guy I want to be giving all the money.

I'm a big believer in getting value for any deal you make. This is not a good value IMO.

How much has Stafford worked out for the Lions?

You keep saying this as if prolonging the inevitable with the current QBs is any better.

There's going to come a time when Cousins and Stafford will no longer be on the team and you'll probably go into rebuild mode, right?

I have no confidence whatsoever that either player can lead a team to a Super Bowl, so why would I prolong that by 5+ years?

Follow the trail back. Rouge said he would resign him, but not at that number. Hence my comment.

Trade him when he's a FA at the end of next year?

He's 29. He has potentially 10 years ahead of him. And he's stuck in a division with Aaron Rodgers, so getting to the playoffs is more difficult for the Lions than most.

Me too, except when it comes to QB. The only options are pay him or let him walk. You seem to be in the let him walk and rebuild category.

Three playoff seasons and he's only 29.

You want to let a 29yo top 10ish QB walk and enter rebuild mode. That's crazy.

What is "the inevitable"?

Yeah, plenty of years in the future. Walking away from a top 10ish QB with the hope of finding someone better in the draft is silly.

Just to clear this up, you let him walk after 2018?

Top 10 is not average. I assume I'm missing your sarcasm here.

Gotcha. I'd make him an offer, it would be lower, he would decline it. Then I'd work to trade him.

I'd trade him whenever the team feels he could fetch max value, whatever that may be.

My thing is, he doesn't have to be as good or nearly as good as Rodgers...who is? But he has to be a guy that on the right day and with the right luck you feel can outplay Rodgers. I don't have that confidence in Stafford, not at all.

quote:

Yes. I feel like sticking with him with this deal actually makes it harder to compete going forward, and again, I don't have any confidence that he can lead my team to a title, so I don't want 5 more of what I'd consider wasted years.
