Samson said his understanding was Ali was dead, and he had not been aware the news had not been made public yet.

Lying to cover his arse, he gambled on being the first outlet to really "report" this and it backfired terribly. Instead of creating an iconic historical moment by showing Ali up on he screen, he created negatively publicity as being the slapdicks that prematurely reported Ali's death. Integrity and accuracy are just small things to sacrifice to be the first to report. Idiots.

I'm not sure I (or anyone who likes sports) understands your questions. What can't you figure out? He's one of the greatest in his sport. As a Yanks fan, would you not mourn Ruth, Mantle, Berra, DiMaggio when they passed? Forget their cultural influence for a second. Ali is (not arguably) one of the greatest.

He wasn't just a great boxer, he was the best ever. He fought during BY FAR the best period in boxing history and had a win over every man he fought until he was almost 39 years old.
Yes he refused enlistment and it was fricking brave of him to do so. The vast majority of blacks were treated like dog shite in the US at the time but he was one of the few that wasn't. He knew that if he had gone he never would have been in danger, they would have sent him around on tours to boost moral, but he was willing to lose everything by not going to make a point and stick up for the blacks that were getting fricked by the rest of the USA.
He was the GOAT and came about at a time when America needed someone like him. I can't even come close to explaining how much he meant to the USA but maybe you should watch a documentary or read a book about him if you don't know why he was so important.

I don't think you can comment on what Ali did unless you grew up in the 50s and 60s.
And we're black.
Not only that, we met him once in the 80s...bunch of white kids and he was so gracious with his time, so friendly, signed every autograph, it wasn't some paid event. He was just spotted. If ever there was a true sports legend. Treated everyone as if they were special. What a personality and larger than life figure. Spent an hour with us.
Ali loved the public, never shied away...and he embraced them and took time and the public embraced him...long before he had Parkinsons. Ali was probably the biggest star athlete of the 20th century... globally.
And to the fans he was great...and seemed to care.
And we're black.

Well if it makes you feel better I have not downvoted anyone.
As I was not alive during many of the Yankees players I would probably be the same way except for Ruth because he transpired the sport. He was above the sport and maybe Ali was as I did not watch him in his prime. I did not watch him during his decline either as he quit before I was ever conceived.

to "grow up" means you needed to be at least 8 in the 50's... so if you were 8 in 1950 you would be 76 now.
