The metro/rural system that is being suggested to replace this system doesn't sound much better either

it ain't the byes, it's the small classes having 0-10 and 1-9 teams in while 5-5 teams missing the playoffs in 5A, etc.
metro and rural is dumb too... you might as well throw darts on the state map

Scheduling bad 1A-2A teams don't get 5A teams in the playoffs

just shows you don't know how the power ratings work... for a 5A team, 2A 10-0 is the same as 5A 10-0
Live Oak, Capitol, and Northeast each lost games by 1 point over the course of the season, with Northeast's to 10-0 Madison Prep. Broadmoor lost to Belaire by 1 score, as did Central to Dutchtown. if two of those go the other way, Walker is in with that 5-5 record and a bad predistrict schedule (though beating a 9-1 team by three touchdowns had them deserving to be in anyhow)
