My son plays in a local league with baseball but some of the other sports he plays travel some. I can see an argument for both sides of the coin.

Is playing within an hour or so drive that big of a deal? Without doing that some sports aren't feasible for younger kids.

Is there a legendary travel ball coach to offer an opposing view?

These are personal decisions to each family, who enjoy active lifestyles and making friends and memories along the way. Sure, some folks get caught up but it's not most.

I've coached both and quite frankly most of the serious problems I saw were at the tee ball level, where many folks had yet to learn proper ballpark etiquette.

Take all the $$$ that a parent spends on travel ball, private lessons, and all the other stuff, and over the course of playing travel ball, they could have used that $$$ to pay for college and have young Jeter walk on and earn his scholarship. Saying "I got a scholarship because I played travel ball" is just not a good argument. Paying 2400$ to play beginning at 13 years old adds up to a lot of moolah

Let me tell you a story about a local douche travel ball coach/tournament director.

130 pitches/game, stud pitcher with a hurt arm for 2nd year in a row. Loses game, gets butt hurt. Sore loser is also a tournament director. Bans team that beats him from entering any tournaments for which he serves as director.

Learn how to coach the game? Learn how not to abuse your pitchers, crybaby.
