Joe, at some point the problem ain't the coach, it's the GM who can't put togther a roster or choose a coach who can use them right.

Agree..
On a side, I'm still no fan of his decision after the Iverson trade in 2009, to blow all that $$$ on Villaneuva and B. Gordon.
Sigh....

I never had a problem with spending the money on Ben Gordon. I really thought he would blow up. That mediocre albino is another story.
Frank had it coming as he apparently asked Gores to guarantee the fourth year.

I'm less certain whether the biggest issues from that time-frame was the Iverson trade, signing Charlie V and Ben Gordon, or hiring Kuester after firing Curry.
The Iverson trade was the beginning of the end for the Pistons, but signing those two fricked their cap space and hiring Kuester lead to the player revolt that effectively killed one season and required the team to waive Rip Hamilton.

Frank was trying to see if they would fire him and pay him or if he would be a lame duck.
Barring a major turnaround, I seriously doubt he was going to be brought back after next season.

Whatever coach gets this team is going to have at least a decent core to work with. Top 10 pick, Brandon Knight, Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond. That's a nice young four players to start with

Dumars has been a good GM. Putting together a young team that won a NBA title before disbanding. It's just hard tryin to mix and match to recreate success like that. Ainge with 1 championship with Allen, Garner and Pierce and dealing Perkins to OKC is a fraud. Jordan who seems content on doing nothing is the bottom.

Drummond was really beginning to show signs of potential until he got hurt. He might be pretty good, especially paired with Monroe.

I still shudder when I think Drummond was almost there for the Hornets err Pelicans to snare at 10 before Dumars traded up to steal at 10.
Instead they get stuck with a stood have stayed at Duke Rivers. Drummond & Davis could have been a great Twin tower connection for years. Certainly much more athletic than Robinson & Duncan could ever be.

He gave the Pistons an ultimatium to either give him more years or let him go bc he didn't want to be a lame duck coach next year.
Apparently the Pistons went with option B

That would be an amazing bigman tandem, potential wise. I'm very interested to see how Drummond develops, Rivers too.

you can't pin Larry Brown on Joe D. That dude is a shithead who is constantly leaving teams early. He was friggin negotiating with the Cavs DURING the playoffs when they were trying to repeat.

Both are really great post passers and would love to see those two start and get extended playing time together. Possibly take someone like Muhammad in the draft as a small forward, sign Mayo or Iggy and that is one pretty good starting 5 for a new coach
