Bulldogs hold No. 24 spot in USA Today Coaches Poll

SEAN ISABELLA USA TODAY NETWORK Louisiana Tech baseball is finally getting the national recognition it sought. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 24 in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll released Monday, which marks the first time the program has been ranked since 1986. Later Monday, the team earned a No. 25 ranking in the NCBWA Top 30 Poll.

Tech is 11-1 to start the season and wrapped up a week where it went 4-1, including a series sweep over Wichita State and a win over then-No. 24 Arkansas. On Wednesday, Arkansas handed Tech its first loss of the season. At the time, Tech was one of just eight remaining unbeatens in the country.

“This was a really big week for us. Obviously we had Arkansas, Wichita State, Mississippi State coming up,” Tech senior closer Nate Harris said last Friday.

“We knew this was going to be a big weekend. We’re just still trying to prove to people what Louisiana Tech baseball is about.”

The 1986 Bulldogs wrapped up a 36-25 season with a spot in the Top 25 at No. 19 thanks to a 20-6 finish to the season.

They captured the Southland Conference championship and won a pair of games in the NCAA Regionals.

Week-by-week rankings aren’t on file from back then, so it isn’t known if Tech was ranked during the season at any other point since 1986.

Tech travels to Mississippi State on Tuesday then plays a three-game series at Arkansas State this weekend.

USA Today’s Coaches Poll features 31 head coaches from around the country.

How is LA Tech's recruiting going? I know that Goff hit the JuCo trail hard to stock the roster. I was just looking at their stats and saw that basically every big contributor is a senior with some juniors mixed in.

This might be their best shot to make some noise before being wiped out.

I think that's a fair statement. Same thing happened with the football team under Dykes. Stocked with Jucos and bounced. Leaving the cupboard bare but luckily Holtz has recruiting well and built the program back up.

I'm sure some people will be offended and try to argue with me, but I genuinely am curious about it and not talking shite

I'm a Tech fan Hendo and I know you aren't trolling. You're right, Tech has a tough job to do replacing the majority of their roster next season. As of right now, we're all just trying to enjoy this year. To answer your question, I think Burroughs will recruit local high schools well enough to keep Tech in the annual postseason picture. If he can continue to land a good JUCO prospect or two each cycle I don't see a reason why we can't keep the success going.

Our biggest problem for years was coaching, which trickled down to recruiting. Dog fans are hopeful that problem is behind us.

You can but that's banking on the assumption that all of your jucos will work out like they did before. Anyone who follows college baseball knows that you get some great players and some serious duds from juco.

It's kind of a difficult strategy to keep going. If they are super successful, there's a good shot they leave in the draft. If they take a while to develop, you may only get a season or half a season of production from someone taking up a portion of a scholarship.

I was just curious about how their current recruiting efforts are going because I'm interested in how programs build.

That's understandable. We just played Southern Miss in a series and should've swept. They're pretty solid but they don't seem impossible to overtake. La Tech should have a good shot at winning CUSA.

Monroe is like Paris compared to that pine tree infested red dirt wasteland in Ruston.

Do you have dialup in your trailer or do you have to drive to the local burger king for free wifi?

Yea my good friend who's an OU grad has said how TCU has built and sustained success by going very heavy on Juco recruits over the last 10 years. I can't confirm or deny as I haven't followed TCU super closely other than seeing them on the national stage often. No idea what their rosters look like Year in and year out. But I'll take the OU grad's word for it.

Similarly, the Cajuns have consistently brought in big time Juco contributors over the years as kind of a backfiller but still rely mainly on pure high school recruits. UL recruits pretty well and hard up in North Louisiana. LaTech may find it tougher than they think to land the top guys unless they start making noise every year in postseason.
